You'll want to get the big-ticket items picked out first. These items can include furniture for the nursery, travel system, etc. etc. Before narrowing your choices for these items, consider how you'll want to use them. For example, you may want to ask... are we going to use a jogging stroller often enough to buy one, or can it wait?

Do we want a crib that is convertable into a big-kid bed and beyond, or would it be more fun to buy a new bed later on? Do we need a cradle?

A word of advice: Moses baskets are great! They can travel everywhere and can be used to hold stuffed toys when baby outgrows it!

Deciding how to decorate the nursery: pink? blue?
Not to alarm you mommies who've already had an ultrasound done to 'determine' the sex of your little one, but nothing is 100% accurate until, of course, his or her birthday.
My husband and I learned the hard way that ultrasounds are not always right and ended up having a 'surprise' girl. We had painstakingly created the cutest BUG-themed nursery for our little "boy", so some redecorating was in order... Anyway, my point is, there is still a great advantage to decorating a unisex nursery.

The Essentials!
Must-haves include a diaper pail and a changing table, which may be as simple as a contoured pad on a dresser. Of course, if baby stays in mom & dad's room for the first few months, a pack & play may come in handy for diaper changes in a room other than the nursery. A second diaper pail may come in handy for this. You may want to play it by ear instead of stockk up on a ton of stuff that may or not be used very often. Baby Trend Diaper Champ
