J. K. Rowling: The World's First Billionaire Author
As just about everyone in the world knows, J.K. Rowling is the author of the Harry Potter series. Amazingly, after publishing only six books, Rowling is the richest woman in the UK -- richer even than the Queen of England! She is also the first person in history to become a (US) billionaire by writing books. This is an astonishing thing to consider, especially when we remember that she was a penniless mother on welfare when she wrote the books.
Though I have heard great praise for the Harry Potter books for years, I was never really interested in them because, well, they're children's books -- and I am not a child. Also, I tend to not be interested in books that are so commercially successful. All the hype can be a turn off. What got me interested in these books was a Biography I saw on A&E about J. K. Rowling. I was very moved by her personal story, and, as a fellow writer myself, I was encouraged by the words of wisdom she shared with regard to the writing process.
I'm still not quite a fan of the books themselves, but I have developed enormous respect for the woman behind them. I think that most writers would do well to read a little about her life because, if nothing else, she got children reading again and she almost single-handedly reinvigorated the publishing industry.
