My list of some of the more UNIQUE sitcoms---Situation Comedies Only! (Twilight Zone, Sopranos, etc., not being relevant herein) is not simply a list of the most popular comedies. Everyone knows which have been the most popular sitcoms, but maybe you're unfamiliar with "Black Adder," "Allo Allo," or "Yes Minister," or even some of the greats from the 1950s such as "Burns & Allen." Hence this list.
In alphabetical order, I'll start with one of the few sitcoms set in a different era, the most inventive comedy from Britain called Black Adder (Remastered Ultimate Edition). It's one of the few English society/historical "period pieces" that's a comedy, and full of sarcasm too! (Incidentally, one ought not overdose on escapist television sitcoms, I think. I mean, how many can you watch? That's why I like the shows herein; because they have a twist and/or are unique in some way, in addition to being amusing.) It's hard to get many episodes of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Collection, but having George Burns walk out of the set & speak directly to the audience at times (while spying on his wife Gracie's antics from afar) makes this 1950s show a marvel of delight which no subsequent show has eclipsed. Of course, Monty Python wasn't a sitcom; so I can't include it herein on this list. Instead I'm going to offer up John Cleese; in a simple situation, but one not yet equaled. Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection Remastered. Continuing on we have Hogan's Heroes - The Complete 2nd Season, Hogan's Heroes: The Komplete Series, Kommandant's Kollection; & in the Hogan's Heroes mode there is also a British series set in occupied France that is wackily inventive. Do give it a try. It's called 'Allo 'Allo - The Complete Series One/'Allo 'Allo! The Complete Collection. And there's also a unique Britcom about a guy who time travels between the 1990s and 1940s wartime London. It's called Goodnight Sweetheart: Complete Series [Region 2]. Which brings us to the best sitcom ever made! Only Art Carney and Jackie Gleason could carry dozens of episodes from within the confines of little more than one single spartan room. Hence, I present The Honeymooners - Classic 39 Episodes. Next on tap, and all worthwhile, we have the then barrier breaking The Mary Tyler Moore Show - The Complete First Season; followed by M*A*S*H - Martinis and Medicine Complete Collection, the most unique show ever (I believe) and one of the very best; particularly until the Frank Burns character was written out of the show. Next up is Seinfeld: The Complete Series. I'd just turn on your TV, however, if you want to watch Seinfeld. The episodes are more enjoyable as potluck reruns, I think, anyway. (While you're at it, see also Jerry's documentary on his craft called Comedian.) Continuing on, I doubt you have heard of this selection. It's a satirical look at government bureaucracy and is a must for political junkies of all persuasions. From Britain, it's called, Yes Minister: The Complete Collection. Finally---& suffering from limited release on DVD---is the imaginative delight, Wonder Years: The Best of. (Also worth mentioning, let's see: Batman, Get Smart: The Original TV Series - Season 1, The Addams Family - The Complete Series, & The Munsters: The Complete Series, Bewitched - The Complete First Season (Black and White), Soap - The Complete First Season,Soap: The Complete Series (Slim Packaging), F Troop: The Complete First Season, F Troop - The Complete First Two Seasons 1&2 & SEVERAL that I'M FORGETTING, I'm SURE!---Besides LUCY (I Love Lucy - The Complete First Season)/I Love Lucy: The Complete Series, which I've seen too little of, to judge.)
Of course, sitcoms are like dessert. Do enjoy generous helpings, then have a look now and then at something like C-SPAN's websites ("Booknotes," their "Q & A" program; which are hour-long interview/conversations with an author about a work of non-fiction---it's like reading a book in an hour; and BOOKTV.org too).
PS: If YOU ARE IRISH you might enjoy a non-American program---from Ireland (click title/scroll down for my review of this show ), entitled Ballykissangel - Complete Series One. Happy viewing, Cheers!
