~~~~~ WORK IN PROGRSS!! ~~~~~ Female penmanship is frequently associated with the move towards women's social and political empowerment; but from Sappho, Sheherazade and the great mystics and poets of medieval Europe, like Hildegard of Bingen and Marie de France, to Christine de Pizan (the first woman to earn her living by her pen), as well as the 19th century pioneers on whose works we still draw today, the great "queens of crime," and modern best-selling novelists and outspoken proponents of Women's Lib like Isabel Allende, Toni Morrison and Joyce Carol Oates, women have always found ways to play a vocal (and vital) role in society, whatever the limitations they had to overcome.
