Scales, scales scales... That is where your journey in the world of pianists must begin. The best scale book for piano that I have come across so far Scales, Chords, Arpeggios and Cadences: Complete Book, which has come recommended by my piano teacher (who has a master degree in sacred music from Gorden Conwell). At some auditions, it is a possiblity that you will requested or perhaps even expected to play something by good old daddy Bach, the work that most students play from for their audition is Bach: Two- and Three-Part Inventions for the Piano, Vol. 16 (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics). A great book for the basic facts of music history is The Great Pianists: From Mozart to the Present, the book discusses not only just the major pianists, but also lesser known pianists who's music has been lost through the centuries. This book will give you a far greater knowledge than a typical high school student and will give you more information on the specifics of how pieces were meant to be played. A good resource for when you are in college is Majoring in Music: All the Stuff You Need to Know, it will tell more than you probably thought there was to know about how to succeed as a music major.
