STEAMPUNK Steampunk or Neo-Victorianism (retro-futurism) is a sub-genre of science fiction, speculative fiction and punk. Steampunk has been influenced by the cyberpunk sub-genre and the style of the Victorian Era of Britian and the late 19th century. The steampunk universe is often envisioned as a future utopia of the Victorian era usally on the brink of the industial revolution before the invention of electricity. For example, steam powered machinery, balooned flying machines, leather, brass and spring powered gadgets and victorian style dress including corsets, peticoats, vests, top hats and goggles. Notably, steampunk has been influenced by 19th century inventors such as Leonardo DaVincci, Nichola Tesla and Thomas Edison and writers such as H.G. Wells, Mark Twain, Mary Shelley and Jules Verne. Books:I'm new to reading Steampunk novels but from what i've read so far many of them are adventure/romances with flying ships and supernatural elements. I'd reccomend Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray for starters. Steampunk Bible The Steampunk Bible: An Illustrated Guide to the World of Imaginary Airships, Corsets and Goggles, Mad Scientists, and Strange Literature The Difference Engine The Difference Engine (Spectra special editions) Boneshaker Boneshaker (Sci Fi Essential Books) Steampunk by Ann VanderMeer Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld Soulless by Gail Carriger Stealing Utopia: A Silk, Steel and Steam Story by Tilda Booth The Inventor by Morgan Karpiel
Movies:Old(1920's-1960's)Since the term Steampunk didn't exist until the late 80's these older movies were not made intentionaly to be steampunk, instead they qualify because they were the vision of speculative futurism from the point of view of the late 19th century when they were written. Jules Vern's character Captain Nemo is a signifigent fictional character because of his modern technogies, adventurous spirit and non-conventional mannerisms. A Trip to the Moon (Silent Era) Vintage Cinema - Experiments in Early Film (Enhanced) 1900's The Fabulous World of Jules Verne The Fabulous World Of Jules Verne 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (Two-Disc Special Edition) Captain Nemo and the Underwater City Captain Nemo and the Underwater City War Gods of the Deep War Gods of the Deep/At the Earth's Core Atlantis the lost continent Atlantis; The Lost Continent (Remaster) Journey to the center of the earth Journey to the Center of the Earth Around the World in 80 Days Around the World in 80 Days (Two-Disc Special Edition) Time Machine The Time Machine Island at the top of the world The Island at the Top of the World (30th Anniversary Edition) Master of the world Master of the World [VHS] Crack In the World Crack in the World Land that time forgot The Land that Time Forgot / The People that Time Forgot (Midnite Movies Double Feature) mysterious island Mysterious Island (Widescreen) City Beneath The Sea City Beneath The Sea The First men in the moon H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon
Movies:New(1980's-2000's)I'm not sure that any of these modern movies had the term Steampunk in mind when they were made (except maybe Steamboy), many of them fit into this catagory because the are set in the victorian era, or use film conventions such as sepia tone or film noir influences, show the use steam powered technologies and/or feature fictional characters from the victorian age such as Dorian Gray and Captain Nemo. You can think of these movies as containing elements of Steampunk, instead of being Steampunk movies. Music: Usally a blend of Industrial, Electronica, Punk or Gothica with Victorian style stringed instruments; cello, violin, organ and accordian. Often with sounds of mechinized machinery, moving steam, whirling springs and the poping sounds of an old victrola.
