Products sampled from this guide:
"Turkey staddles the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia. It has had strategic value for centuries, and now with the situation in the Middle East, Turkey is more important than ever. Turkey's history stretches back to the beginnings of civilization. Following the demise of the Ottoman Empire following WWI, a Turkish hero of Gallipoli, Mustafa Kemal, took the name "Ataturk" and instituted a series of educational, cultural and legal reforms that led to modern Turkey. Today, Turkey is poised between Europe and Asia, Islam and Secularism, and tradition and modernity."
It faces problems of Kurdish ethnic separatism; the legacy of the Armenian Genocide, the partitition of Cyprus; and is surrounded by volatile countries including Syria, Iran, and Iraq in Asia; and by Greece,Albania and Bulgaria in Europe.

Gallipoli
One of the ironies of history is that the carnage at Gallipoli helped establish Australian national identity in a battle fought half a world away.
ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand) forces came under heavy attack at Gallipoli and suffered enormous casualties. The Turkish leader at Gallipoli later became Ataturk.

The Turkish Diaspora
In the 1960's, hundreds of thousands of Turkish guestworkers migrated to industrial Western Europe, particularly Germany. They were denied citizenship and created their own diasporas." Because of poor immigration policies in Germany, Turkish immigrants isolated themselves in ethnic enclaves away from the dominant society and created their own vibrant communities. After Germany passed a law in 1983 to pay foreigners to leave the country, Turks set up their own services to mediate between individuals and the government, creating institutionalized space" (WIKIPEDIA)
