A quick guide to superhero prose fiction, and its relatives. With some recommendations, but these are only based on what I have actually. The blog will show if I have read the book or now, as the list entry will be a link, barring any recent few. This, therefore, is a document subject to change. This is for the person who is perhaps interested in just reading a few, or finding some better examples, or just looking for a starting point. My blog has a whole bunch of categories, and I will go through those, and a more detailed explanation can be found there if you are interested. The most important, first. ORIGINAL HEROES SECTION Super Reader Quick Pick : Wild Cards 1 - George R. R. Martin Wild Cards (Wild Cards, Book 1) (Volume One) (v. 1)  No real competitors here. Wild Cards is the winner, and the first book or books will do nicely. An alien spaceship brings a virus to Earth, and after war hero Jetboy fails to stop its release, things change forever. Honorable Mentions : The Secret World Chronicle - Mercedes Lackey and Steve Libbey Honorable Mentions : Superfolks - Robert Mayer Honorable Mentions : Those Who Walk In Darkness - John Ridley DC HEROES SECTION Tie-Ins from this comic companies comics, a section that will be of more interest to some perhaps, so will take a look at the main characters. BATMAN Super Reader Quick Pick : No Man's Land - Greg Rucka Batman: No Man's Land A city cut off and abandoned by the rest of the country, the heroes and police have to deal with the supervillains trying to divide up the land. Honorable Mentions : Inferno - Alex Irvine Honorable Mentions : Knightfall - Dennis O'Neill SUPERMAN Super Reader Quick Pick : Last Son of Krypton - Elliott S. Maggin Superman, Last Son of Krypton Clark and Lex's strange relationship has to be put inside when they have to deal with aliens in space. Rather different to what you would expect. Honorable Mentions : The Death and Life of Superman - Roger Stern Honorable Mentions : Miracle Monday - Elliott S. Maggiin OTHERS Super Reader Quick Pick : V For Vendetta - Steve Moore V for Vendetta A rather good novelisation of the movie, not the comic series. Honorable Mention : Kingdom Come - Elliott S. Maggin Honorable Mention : Helltown - Dennis O'Neill Honorable Mention : Trail Of Time - Jeff Mariotte Honorable Mention : Infinite Crisis - Greg Cox MARVEL HEROES SECTION I haven't read as much here, which hopefully will be rectified a bit this year. SPIDER-MAN Super Reader Quick Pick : The Darkest Hours - Jim Butcher Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours Peter needs help against a much more powerful foe, and this may include the Black Cat and the Rhino. Honorable Mention : The Ultimate Spider-Man - Stan Lee X-MEN Super Reader Quick Pick : Five Decades of the X-Men - Stan Lee X-Men: Five Decades of the X-Men (X-Men (Ibooks)) A story from each decade of the team's existence, starting from the early adventure to some other good adventures. Honorable Mention : The Last Stand - Chris Claremont OTHERS Super Reader Quick Pick : Nightmare - William Rotsler Nightmare: Doctor Strange - Master of the Mystic Arts Doctor Strange versus his arch foe from the Dream Dimension. Honorable Mention : What Savage Beast - Peter David 2000 AD Section Again, lots here I haven't read as yet. Super Reader Quick Pick : Dredd vs Death - Gordon Rennie Dredd vs Death (Judge Dredd) Judge Dredd versus those evil Judge types. OPERATOR 5 Super Reader Quick Pick : The Yellow Scourge - Curtis Steele <product no longer available> Super secret agent trying to protect American from anything that isn't American, complete with kid sidekick and family. PULP HEROINES SECTION Super Reader Quick Pick : The Golden Amazon Returns - John Russell Fearn The Golden Amazon Returns Golden Amazon Series #2 A superwoman can be very protection. FLYING ACES SECTION Super Reader Quick Pick : The Bat Staffel - Robert J. Hogan G-8 and His Battle Aces : The Bat Staffel #1 The first G-8 adventure against very strange German opponents. SPY HEROES SECTION Super Reader Quick Pick : Modesty Blaise - Peter O'Donnell Modesty Blaise: Bk. 1 A retired crimelord, Blaise and her Partner Willie Garvin help out the English secret service. Really good adventure. Honorable Mention : Goldfinger - Ian Fleming BUFFY UNIVERSE SECTION Super Reader Quick Pick : Tales Of the Slayer 3 - Yvonne Navarro Tales of the Slayer, Volume 3 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) There are several of these, some good stories here. Honorable Mention : The Lost Slayer - Christopher Golden (Many ties for novel, I quite like The Lost Slayer 4 part serial novel, if I had to pick one.)
