Understand Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing

A guide by Philip W. Henry (Rialto, CA)

GENOCIDE AND ETHNIC CLEANSING

The Twentieth Century saw some of history’s worst examples of genocide and ethnic cleansing. In Cambodia under Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, some two million Cambodians were killed between 1975 and 1979. Some of the war criminals continue to face charges in international courts. The international community stood by as Hutus massacred some 800,000 Tutsis with machetes. In East Timor, Indonesian troops clashed with ethnic minorities. Buddhist monks were killed by Burmese soldiers under a repressive military regime that still imprisons Aung San Suu Kyi, the hero of Burmese independence. The Balkans were rocked by religious and ethnic violence as well. One community in the former Yugoslavia, Visegrad, was the site of the torture and murder of hundreds of people by Serb troops ("The Bridge over The Drina") Turkey continues to deny responsibility for the genocide of Armenians at the close of WWI.
The Partitition that divided India into Pakistan and India witnessed the death of thousands on both sides. As Philip Gourevich wrote in “We Wish To Inform You that Tomorrow we Will be Killed with our Families,” it is the idea of genocide that is the crime.
In his study of the psychology of mass violence, "Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Murder," psychologist James Waller notes that the only species which attacks their own species is man, followed by chimpanzees, our closest evolutionary relative.

Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge
Pol Pot was an obscure Marxist and guerrilla fighter when he began to cobble together what would become the feared Khmer Rouge. In the late 1970’s he decreed that time would be re-set to “Year Zero,” private property would be abolished, and the populations of the cities would be relocated to the countryside. His policies were an unmitigated disaster. Fortunately for us, there has been an outpouring of good scholarship on the Khmer Rouge in the past few years. "Pol Pot: Anatomy of a Nightmare" by Philip Short; Ben Kiernan's books, and Chandler's histories are all excellent.

The Pol Pot Regime: Race, Power, and Genocide in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, 1975-79

Rwanda and the silence of the world community
Philip Gourevich's "We Wish to Inform You that Tomorrow we will be Killed with our Families" is the best of several relatively new books on the Rwanda crisis.
There are also several excellent first-person narratives.
Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust
Machete Season: The Killers in Rwanda Speak
Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda
The Order of Genocide: Race, Power, and War in Rwanda
Eyewitness to a Genocide: The United Nations and Rwanda

Bosnia, Serbia, the Balkans

Slaughterhouse: Bosnia and the Failure of the West
Srebrenica: Record of a War Crime
My War Gone By, I Miss It So
Black Lamb and Grey Falcon (Penguin Classics)
The Bridge on the Drina (Phoenix Fiction)

Turkey and the Armenian Genocide
For a good overview of modern Turkey, I suggest "Crescent and Star." For background on the Ottoman Empire, there are "Osman's Dream" and "Lords of the Horizon: A History of the Ottoman Empire."
Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds
The History of the Armenian Genocide: Ethnic Conflict from the Balkans to Anatolia to the Caucasus
A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East
Black Dog of Fate: An American Son Uncovers His Armenian Past
The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America's Response

Burma, Orwell, and Aung San Suu Kyi
Burma is one of Asia's most repressive regimes: dissent is not tolerated, foreigners aren't welcome, and the leader of the country's outlawed democratic movement is imprisoned.
