This is a guide to some of the books that I would pick for a lazy day of reading at the beach.
War and Peace (Vintage Classics) This is my personal favorite of all time. The story of three Russian families and their travails during the Napolean war, the novel is rich in realistic and finely drawn characters and has everything that makes a great novel – valor, sacrifice, love and of course death.
The Old Man and The Sea This classic tale by Hemingway, is something I could read over and over again. A tale of man in harmony with nature, the sparse prose style is a delight and shows why he got the Nobel for this one.
The Circle of Fire: The Metaphysics of Yoga This is a great book on spirituality that I would recommend to anyone who has pondered on questions like ‘what is God’. It tackles all the hardest questions, and provides answers which are completely rational and accords with science. At the same time, it describes in clear and passionate language the ancient path of spirituality described in the Upanishads, the Advaita. The clearest book of its genre.
One Hundred Years of Solitude (P.S.) This is a classic by Garcia Marquez, a tale of a town that lives in magic realism, the surrealistic images, the stranger than life characters, all add up to a great and moving novel.
Horns: A Novel A strange dark tale, a gripping tale of good and evil, with fantastic characters and magic thrown in.
The Swan Thieves: A Novel A psychological mystery, of a man who attacks and destroys a painting for no apparent reason, and the exploration by a psychiatrist into the case which leads to an old scandal.
The Historian This is the only debut novel to leap into the number one on the New York bestseller lists. A tale about vampires and the men who are destined to fight them.
