stay alive during the zombie apocalypse

A guide by emptypockets304

Products sampled from this guide:
Many of the guides here on Amazon seem like repetitions of the same idea. Combat boots, a machete, one or two interesting/useful items, the end. A person's best bet for survival is staying unseen. Zombies won't chase and devour what they can't find or get to. This guide assumes the user is traveling by foot. Thus, the focus of this guide is on lightweight, multi-purpose gear that would help a person stay fast on their feet and well-hidden. Although not addressed in this guide, a good shotgun and medical supplies should also be considered mandatory.

Kelty Redstart 1600 Backpack
First, you'll need a backpack that is durable and just the right size to carry everything without being too big and slowing you down. I have this one. The front sleeve/pocket really comes in handy sometimes.

Secondly, a means of shelter that can keep you out of reach:
A hammock is a much better idea than a tent because it gets you off the ground and out of the way. Also, it is much smaller and lightweight for the times when you don't need it.

Kelty Noahs Tarp
A tarp will help when setting up outside. Doesn't have to be this one, but don't use a standard car tarp because they are very loud.

ADJUSTABLE CLAMP CO 88122 Ratchet Tie-Down And Strap Clamp - 2pc Set
Ratchet binders will help set up the hammock and can have other uses as well.
These are usually tested in their ability to secure cars, so a few hundred pounds (max) won't be enough to break them. You will want to make sure to have at least 2.

Rothco 550lb. Type III Nylon Paracord
You will also need para-cord. It's useful for everything, including setting up your tarp.

MSR Dragonfly Stove
I won't go into food items, but I can highly recommend this stove. It runs on many types of fuel and is easy to clean. An MSR Dragonfly Expedition Service Kit for Liquid-Fuel Stove may also be handy.

Ka-Bar 2-1245-1 Black Tanto Knife
This knife really is a work of art. Large enough to be highly versatile. Don't forget a sharpener.

Every pound on your feet is the same as 5 on your back. Instead of heavy boots, either of these shoes are plenty of protection on your feet and the split toe design maximizes dexterity.

Marmot Gravity Jacket - Men's
Keeping dry in the rain could mean the difference between life and death. This is just one of many possible waterproof shell jackets.

Cold Steel Brooklyn Smasher
Don't underestimate the versatility of a good blunt weapon.

Fenix 265 Lumen LED Flashlight
A good flashlight really comes in handy. This one works great for me. Don't forget CR123 batteries.

Haynes Hunting Patented Cap Liner Insert and Wildlife Research 561 Scent Killer Combo with Bar Soap & Book
Being smelled by a zombie can be just as deadly as being seen. Between these two, body odors should be kept to a minimum. May also lead to a more pleasant group experience.

Mountain Hardwear Men's Elkommando Kilt
For range of motion, a kilt can't be beat. This one is well constructed and durable. Also helps regulate body temperature in warm environments.

Marmot Mens Zeus Jacket
I can't explain why the description is wrong, but this is actually a down jacket by marmot. I have this one and it is extremely warm. Because a sleeping bag may be too much to carry around, and leaves you vulnerable while in it, the best thing to do for sleeping is just wear warm clothes. Also invaluable in winter.

Zippo Black Matte Lighter with Border
A good lighter is another essential piece of equipment.

Magnesium Fire Starter
I think the magnesium makes this a better choice than stand-alone strikers.

It's really hard to have too many options for fire. These ones are easy to light and weather-resistant.

FINAL THOUGHTS: much more important than what you have is what you know. Learn as much as you can now about wilderness survival, first aid, and weapons training.
