As good as 2010 was in new music of the R&B,jazz, funk and all that this following year has turned out to be even better in that respect. Gradually there's been a marked attempts to re-invent the music outside the hip-hop and smooth jazz relm it's been stuck in for the better part of a decade and half. A good range of people put out records during this time. And in some cases very long anticipated. So here it is!
7...-Somewhat uneven album, using the angle of being a "real band playing real music" while largely keeping to the fairly ordinary modern hip-hop styled contemporary R&B despite it all Tha Funk Capitol Of The World- A little long now and again, but funky enough in spots, A Woman Falling Out of Love- Wonderfully dynamic and well produced comeback for the Queen Of Soul! The Light Of The Sun-Powerful and diverse array of modern jazz and funk flavors 4-Very mature and often urban jazz-pop release from Beyonce' Pieces Of Me-Excellent new set from Oakland funky diva MUSIQINTHEMAGIQ-Hard grooving neo soul mixture, here and there Black and White America-Very funk and new wave influenced set from Lenny, showcasing a good deal of racial and social awareness Miss Little Havana-Gloria goes for some high octane modern freestyle club grooves produced by Pharrell Williams Guitar Man-Excellent reinterpretation of classics, showcasing "Bad Benson" hasn't lost any of his chops What Were You Hoping For- Very disappointing attempt to toughen up the rock element of his sound Where It All Begins- Not a bad mix of modern and retro textures from husky voiced family successor to her father. Undun- Superb, grooving concept album from The Roots. Love After War [2 CD Deluxe Edition]-Excellent follow up for Robin Thicke My Life II: The Journey Continues, Act 1-Honestly?Not one of Mary's strongest. But has some strong and captivating moments here and again. I Remember Me-Wonderful,richly percussive sophistifunk with Alica Keys,R.Kelly and of course Hudson's soulful interpretive vocal chops. Back To Love- The first Anthony Hamilton album I ever heard. And I hope not the last. Sleekly grooving, melodic gospel/soul/funk. The Dreamer, The Believer- Lushly textured and culturally reflective hip-hop masterwork.
