So You'd Like to create a human-powered internet video.

This Amazon "So You'd Like to..." Guide explores the basics of human-powered electricity generating, battery storage and power conversion for powering simple digital video projects intended for internet publishing.

Some valuable prerequisites can be found in other guides. Search for production terms like "Shooting, Lighting, Audio & Video Recording, Editing, Titling, Keying, Motion Graphics," etc...

You will need:

- An Human-Powered Electric Generator
(Either a Hand-crank style or Bicycle-style, plus then you would also need a Bicycle :)
Bicycle Generator Kit 300 Watts DC Pedal Power Generator With Dynamo, Belt, Plate, Stand

- An Integrated 12vDC/110vAC PowerPack
(or you can put together your own Battery, Charge Controller & Inverter. I use a WindStreamPower.com bicycle-style generator with an integrated PowerPack.)
Xantrex XPower Powerpack 600HD Portable Power Source

- An iPhone 4 with iMovie App, or some other energy-efficient device(s) with which to record, edit and upload your project, and all of their chargers.
(I originally recorded using a Flip MinoHD camcorder, and edited and uploaded using an MacBook Air laptop. But it takes much less time and effort to charge my new iPhone 4)

1. Connect the generator to the PowerPack. If using a bicycle-style generator, connect a bicycle to the generator. Crank or Pedal the generator at the optimum rate for maximum charging. For my set-up, I must pedal at an ambitious rate for four hours to completely charge my PowerPack 12v auto-sized Battery. I could optionally attach a second 12v Battery, which would require an additional four hours of pedaling.

2. Connect the iPhone 4 to the PowerPack using an approved charger. It is preferable to use an auto cigarette lighter-style DC charger to a household-style AC charger because some of the hard-earned electricity will be lost in the power conversion. My PowerPack has one cigarette lighter-style DC adapter and an integrated Inverter with two standard 3-prong household-style outlets.

3. When fully charged, disconnect the iPhone and go record your movie. For $4.99 you can edit your movie using the iMovie App (which incidentally was created by the same digital video editing mind that created Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie for Mac OS X.) If you are using other devices to record and edit, you will need to account for the electricity requirements when charging up your PowerPack (or other battery setup.)

4. When satisfied, upload your video to the Internet, using YouTube, to another web-based video publishing service, or to your own website.

I can not overemphasize the benefits of using an energy-efficient all-in-one device such as the Apple, Inc. iPhone 4 for Human-Powered New Media production. With it, you can spend more time making your Internet Video, and less time burning calories to capture electrons!

5. Remember, to make a Human-Powered Internet Video, you can't charge your devices using grid-connected power, or even another Renewable Energy source such as Wind, Solar, or Hydro. Don't cheat! Drain your batteries before you pedal or crank.
