Introduction Jujutsu is a class of Japanese martial arts that utilize throws, sweeps, joint-locks, and chokes as well as strikes. Many other arts including Judo, Aikido, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Russian Sambo trace their roots to Jujutsu. Although there are hundreds of jujutsu/jujitsu books on the market today, most are of very low quality. The 13 books listed below are among the best, and will provide a broad introduction to the topic.
Technique I do not believe there are any first-rate English language books on on the technical aspects of traditional jujutsu. There are, however, some excellent manuals on related arts that will be of great value to the student of jujutsu. Students of these related arts will probably take issue with my choices as each art is represented by what I believe to be the best 1-2 volume technical manual rather than the revered text written by that art's founder. The ones I have selected focus not on the particular kata of those arts, but on clear analysis of individual techniques, which will be of greater value to the jujutsu student.
