I love reading paranormal romance and urban fantasy, and generally prefer a well-written story, good character development, a lot of action, suspense and at least a little romance. I've read so many vampire tales lately that I have been looking for something non vampire just as a change of pace. If you are on the hunt for good paranormal romance or urban fantasy books focused on shapeshifters, hunt no more! Here are some of my favorites with werewolves, cat shifters, dragon shifters and more. Give them a try.
Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, Book 1) - Mercy Thompson is my all time favorite shapeshifter series. Excellent read! Couldn't put them down. Focuses on a coyote shifter and a wolf pack. In some of the books, there are also secondary characters such as the Fae, magic users and vampires. Lots of action, adventure, mystery, suspense and a litle romance.
Magic Bites (Kate Daniels) The Kate Daniels series one of my favorite series right now behind Mercy Thompson. The main character is a magic user mercenary who goes after various types of monsters and bad magic users. She has a lot of shapeshifter friends, including romantic tension with Curran the alpha.
Lord of the Fading Lands A wonderful fantasy romance, the Tairen Soul series focuses on Rain, King of the Fey (and a Tairen shifter) and his shetani (ie, mate) Elly. The world building is excellent and story really pulls you in.
Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1) Great series focuses on changelings (ie, shapeshifters) and Psys. This is one of my favorites of the shapeshifter romance series. Very good, highly original world building and great characters.
Tempting Danger (The World of the Lupi, Book 1) The World of Lupi is an engrossing, well-written werewolf series. Features an FBI agent who becomes a mate to the prince of wolves. In each case they work an interesting case, so the books are a mix of mystery and paranormal.
The Mane Event I love Shelly Laurenston's Pride Stories series. They are hysterically funny, cannot put down reads. Fast moving stories, great character development, good romance. These have some erotic sex scenes, just in case that isn't your thing.
Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin Book 1) GA Aiken is Shelly Laurenston's other pen name. Her Dragon Kin series is another very good, highly original fantasy romance. Full of humor, it's my favorite of the dragon shifter series out right now.
A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, Book 1) Several of the books in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series are focused on shapeshifters. The first book A Hunger Like No Other is one of my favorites and is about the king of the werewolves finding his mate. Ignore the lame covers on the first couple of books; the books are much better than the covers.
Night Play (Dark-Hunter, Book 6) I really like Kenyon's Dark Hunter paranormal romance series, some of which include were hunter shapeshifters. Night Play with Vane and Bride was one of my favorites in the series that focused on the shifters.
Desire Unchained (Demonica, Book 2) Part of Larissa Ione's popular Demonica series, Desire Unchained focuses on the relationship between Runa, a werewolf, and Shade, a Seminus Demon. This is an entertaining, hard to put down series, which includes shapeshifters, demons, vampires, and more.
Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1) A cannot put down series, the Sookie Sackhouse novels are quirky, entertaining and full of adventure and suspense. The series includes shapeshifters as secondary characters. Great reads!
Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires) An excellent new series, Chicagoland Vampires is about a grad student Merit who is turned into a vampire following an attack. The series is mostly about vampires, but also contains shapeshifters, magic users and more. Shapeshifters took a larger role in the third book.
Darkness Everlasting (Guardians of Eternity, Book 3) The third book of A. Ivy's Guardians of Eternity series, Darkness Everlasting was the first book that included a werewolf as a main character--Darcy. It focuses on Darcy's relationship with Styx, the Anasso of vampires. This is a great, cannot put down series.
Vulnerable: The First Book of the Little Goddess Series The Little Goddess Series by Amy Lane is a real find. A very good series by a new author, it's an engrossing mix of mystery, suspense, drama, action and romance. Featuring shapeshifters, the Fae, and vampires, it has intriguing characters and good relationship development.(Note: if the printed books are too expensive, I found ebooks (pdf) from the publisher for 6 bucks at www.iuniverse.com)
Tempest Rising (Jane True) A wonderful series by a new author, the Jane True books remind me in style to Sookie Sackhouse. Quirky, fun, interesting characters and a fast moving plotine. Good mix of adventure, suspense, mystery, humor and romance. Great world builing--I loved the range of the types of characters, e.g. shapechangers, gnomes, vampires, kelpies, goblins, succubus, alfar and more.
Elijah (The Nightwalkers, Book 3) I really enjoyed the Nightwalkers series, which included two books ("Elijah" and "Damien") with shifters as main characters. The stories were well written and fast paced. I liked the characters and the romance between them.
Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Book 1) The Anita Blake series is focused mainly on necromancer/vampire executioner Anita Blake. She has love interests with both shapeshifters and vampires starting around book 3-4. The series has several types of shifters -- werewolves, rats, hyenas, cats and swans. The early books are more urban fantasy. The later books starting around #10 are more erotica.
She's No Faerie Princess (The Others, Book 10) Christine Warren's Others series are entertaining reads with a good mix of romance, action and suspense. She's No Faerie Princess is focused on the relationship between a werewolf and Fae princess. Some of the other books involve shapeshifters and vampires.
Marked by Moonlight (Moon Chasers) A different take on many werewolf novels, the Marked by Moonlight series by Shari Kohler presents them as evil killers. The series focuses on werewolf hunters as the heros.
Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, Book 1) A new urban fantasy series, the Jane Yellowrock books are about a skinwalker (ie, shapeshifter) vampire hunter. Lots of action, violence, and adventure. Not a romance, but still a good read.
Morrigan's Cross (The Circle Trilogy, Book 1) Nora Roberts's Circle Trilogy brings together a shape-shifter, sorcerer, witch, warrior, scholar, and lost soul to battle the forces of evil. She writes a good romance without heavily graphic sex scenes.
Blue Moon (Nightcreature, Book 1) With werewolves betrayed as vicious killers, the Moon series by Lori Handeland features werewolf hunters. Lots of action, adventure and romance.
Tiger Eye (Dirk & Steele, Book 1) Several of the Dirk & Steele books by Marjorie Liu are focused on shapeshifters. Some were good and others not quite as good. I liked the first book Tiger Eye. An original shifter tale with good romance and an interesting story.
Hotter After Midnight Paranormal romances, the Midnight series by Cynthia Eden contains shapeshifters, vampires, witches, and more.
Alpha Turned Great werewolf romance from a new author. One of the better steamy romances I've seen with world building around being a werewolf, their life and politics. I liked the main characters and supporting cast. Ignore the lame cover; this is one that 'you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.'
Burning Wild (Leopard) Part of C. Feehan's new Leopard series, Burning Wild was full of action, adventure, suspense and romance. She is better known for her long running Carpathians series, about vampires who can shapeshift into other forms.
Mercury's War (Breeds, Book 16) The Breeds series is highly original with very good world building around the Breeds' life, their politics, etc. Good character development, makes you want to read all of them to see your favorite characters again and again. But word of warning, they are heavy on the steaminess in case that's not your thing.
Supernatural Bonds: Sophie's Dragon An engrossing dragon shifter romance tale, full of mystery, action and suspense. I liked the characters and it was hard to put down. More on the steamy side like Lora Leigh, I like Jory Strong's Supernatural Bonds series and her Angelini series. They are focused on shapeshifters, vampires, magic users and more.
The Misfits (Trueblood Book 4) Part of a steamy paranormal series, Misfits had me on the edge of my seat throughout much of it. Couldn't put it down! The romance was between Jay, a werewolf, Dominic, a vampire, and Holly, a Fae. I liked the main characters and supporting cast. There were so many twists and turns, and several scary bad guys.
Maxwell's Fall (Wolf's Heritage, Book Three) Tielle St.Clare writes very steamy paranormal romance, with engrossing stories about shapeshifters and their mates. Sometimes a bit heavy on the smex for me personally. I read her werewolf books. She has a dragon series also, which I haven't read but it was recommended to me.
Hunters: The Beginning The Hunter series by Shiloh Walker are very steamy romances featuring shapeshifters and vampires. I've read through book 5. I liked books 4-5 the best so far.
Full Moon Rising (Riley Jenson Guardian) More on the steamy side, the Riley Jenson Guardian books by Kerri Arthur focus on a part werewolf part vampire who works for the Guardians, fighting rogue monsters (wolves, vamps, etc.) She also has an earlier Circle series featuring shifters.
Feral Domination Part of LA Day's Feral shapeshifter series, Feral Domination focuses on the controversial relationship between the alpha of a werewolf pack and a female werecat. These books are heavy on the steamy side, like Lora Leigh.
Chasing Her Tail By: Katie Allen is a light, appealing shapeshifter tale where a kindergarten teacher is turned into a shifter by accident. There is a lot of action, suspense and steamy romance. A good read. (I've read her non paranormal stuff like Raw Footage and One Two Punch and those were good too.)
Into the Mist (Falcon Mercenary Group Book 1) The Falcon Mercenary Group books by by Maya Banks are original shapeshifter tales in that humans are turned into shapeshifters due to chemical experimentation. More on the the steamy side like Leigh, these books have lots of action and intrigue. She has some other shifter books Golden Eyes and Amber Eyes.
