Natalie Merchant, who began her recording career in 1981 as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the band 10,000 Maniacs, has just released Retrospective 1995-2005, her first-ever "best of" disc. In addition to featuring all her singles, the album contains outtakes, B-sides, unreleased tracks, songs from soundtracks, and collaborations with Billy Bragg, R.E.M., the Chieftains, and others.

Natalie Merchant's List of Music You Should Hear
Chelsea Girl, Nico I used to judge my friends by their tolerance level for the voice of my once beloved chanteuse.
Funky Kingston/In the Dark, Toots & the Maytals 'Funky Kingston' is my favorite reggae album, hands down.
O Seasons O Castles and Jet, Katell Keineg Katell is an incredible songwriter (and dear friend). I've spent years trying to unravel the mystery of why her name is not on everybody's list of favorites.
Time Is on My Side, Irma Thomas My favorite from the undisputed queen of New Orleans R&B. Favorite tracks: "Take a Look," "It's Raining," "I Done Got Over It," and "Ruler of My Heart."
Siren, Roxy Music The atmosphere created by Roxy Music on this album is completely unique, for the time (1975) up until the present. My favorite tracks: "Sentimental Fool," "She Sells," "Both Ends Burning," and "Just Another High."
Closing Time, Tom Waits Blood Money is an undeniable dark masterpiece, but the songs on this early album by Tom Waits are so beautiful. It's hard to believe they're by the same songwriter, what an evolution.
I Will Not Be Sad in This World, Djivan Gasparyan Traditional Armenian duduk played by the master, it will break your heart.
Gospels, Spirituals & Hymns, Mahalia Jackson This Mahailia Jackson box set lays a great foundation for anyone interested in gospel music.
Wild is the Wind / High Priestess of Soul and Pastel Blues/Let It All Out, Nina Simone It's hard to find an artist with more compilation records. 'Wild Is the Wind' and 'Let It All Out' contain some of her best songs, and you have the opportunity to hear the albums as she intended.
