There is a set-up to this story but the writer/director/actress Laura Colella uses it more as a suggestion and doesn't feel the need to grind it out.

Here's the scoop. young Curtis is mistakenly accused, by his flighty, Bohemian neighbor, of throwing something at his cat. Said neighbor issues a violent threat to the young boy that causes a rift between the two families. Years later the neighbor enlists Curtis' help in helping launch a video blog. Things change from there.

You do see the socially awkward Curtis start to enter into the project and go from a reluctant participant to his starting to flourish in it, but they really don't spend all that much time with him. A lot of time is spent with this whacky bunch of artsy types and then seeing that Curtis' family is not all they seem when we first meet them. I'm a child of the 60's so I applaud the free thinking lifestyle shown by these folk. Syd might be a bit too much for my taste. I could only take him in small doses. But they're full of (and surrounded by) color. They want clever and beautiful things in their lives. They indulge in all sort of weird endeavors, but now and then they refocus on Curtis as he gets a better look at the world around him as he sees all the possibilities available if he leaves himself open to them.

This is plainly, but beautifully shot. I liked the set designs (as few of them as there were. And I liked seeing these people transform. By the end I felt as things were going to be Okay and everyone had found a certain peace and some level of friendship with one another. Not a bad thing.

This isn't Colella's first outing as director and I've not seen her previous works. I do enjoy her sensibilities and will seek out her other films. If you like your poison left of center, this is for you.

Totally entertaining movie about an ultra shy boy's coming-of-age summer. The ever so kooky cast of characters are well drawn and consistently developed throughout, as the summer unfolds, a young artistic spirit emerges and the seasons turn. I wish I lived on that street!

A delightful film... not too serious not too deep. I was even more delighted to learn that the Purple Citadel is real. All throughout the film I just kept saying to myself "I wish they were MY neighbors!"

Beautiful, quirky, personal film. It has a lovely sense of summer, old-fashioned gardens, and maverick camaraderie. Laura is a director to watch!
