Watch on Your TV Frequently Asked Questions
How does Amazon Instant Video work on a TV?
Amazon Instant Video streams movies and TV shows directly to your TV over the internet. You can shop and watch over 90,000 movies and TV shows instantly on your TV with Amazon Instant Video.
The easiest way to watch Amazon Instant Video on your TV is to use one of the many compatible TVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes (see compatible devices). If you have a compatible device then all you need to do is connect it to the internet and register your Amazon.com account.
How do I connect my device to the Internet?
There are three ways to connect an Amazon Instant Video compatible device to the internet.
Please click here for a more detailed explanation on connecting your compatible device to the internet.
How and why do I need to register my compatible TV or device with Amazon.com?
To access Amazon Instant Video content you already own or to purchase new videos, you need to link your device to your Amazon.com account. If you don't have an Amazon.com account, you can create one free during the registration process.
The registration process is simple and straightforward. Choose the brand name of your device in the top left-hand corner of this page and then click the registration link near the top of the page that follows. You will be shown a step by step guide that you can follow to complete device registration. You will need access to your Amazon Instant Video-compatible device to complete the registration process.
Do I need to install any special software to use this service?
No. Once you've registered your TV or device, you're ready to order and watch videos instantly on your TV. (You can also shop online in the Amazon Instant Video Store on Amazon.com).
What is the quality of the videos?
The video quality we deliver will depend on your internet connection. We'll automatically detect your connection speed and send you the highest quality stream your connection can support. Our standard definition files are comparable to DVD quality and our HD files are even better. Our HD files are streamed in high-quality 720p resolution, or can be downloaded to TiVo at 1080i resolution.
Will I be able to watch videos in HD?
We have many HD movies and TV shows available to watch instantly. Viewing this content requires an HD capable set-up (including TV, device and wires, if applicable) and a fast internet connection. Many Amazon Instant Video-compatible devices will let you sample a video in HD prior to buying it so that you can make sure you have the proper setup.
HD-compatible devices will have HD movie and TV show categories to make it easy to find HD content.
Can I watch content with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound?
Most of our HD movie rentals and HD TV shows are encoded with 5.1 audio. If you have 5.1 capable equipment and sufficient bandwidth you will be able to enjoy surround sound. If you do not meet the requirements for 5.1 audio, you will receive stereo sound.
To see if your compatible device supports 5.1 audio and to learn about the steps needed to enable it, please find your device on the top left of this page and follow the link for device specific information.
A movie or TV available with 5.1 audio will have a "5.1" icon displayed on its detail page.
How fast does my Internet connection need to be?
We support a minimum connection speed of 450 Kbits/sec but recommend a connection speed of 1.5 Mbits/sec or higher to get the most out of your online Amazon Instant Video experience. We're unable to deliver these high-quality videos online via dial-up and other slow connections.
To watch HD videos you need a fast broadband connection (3.5Mbits/sec or higher). Our 2.5Mbps HD files are streamed in high-quality 720p resolution. We'll automatically detect your connection speed, send you the highest quality stream your connection can support, and display the stream quality on the video player. When you are successfully watching HD, the stream quality on your video playback bar will turn blue and the letters "HD" will be illuminated.
