compared to the KidCo food mill,

This review is from: green sprouts Baby Food Mill, Green (Baby Product)
I prefer this in almost all ways to the KidCo food mill of similar shape and function. (This is not to say the KidCo is a bad product. I simply prefer the Green Sprouts one. The one reason I can see for the KidCo might be if your baby is just starting solid foods, and this is because the KidCo has smaller holes in the grinding surface and hence makes food slightly less textured. The KidCo also came with an extra gasket, and some versions come with a carrying case.)Pros of the Green Sprouts: --Bigger overall, meaning more room in the base to fill with food and more room in the bowl for milled food. It also has a 'pour' spout on the bowl. --Easier to understand. The Green Sprouts directions were longer and clearer. --Easier to use. The KidCo is stiffer and harder to push down and harder to turn. --Easier to disassemble. The KidCo is a pain in the rear to get apart. I often have to jam a toothpick in one of the holes in the grate to get the top to unscrew. By comparison, I just tighten the easy-turn knob on the Green Sprouts' central post and then unscrew the top. --Easier to clean. I frequently have to painstakingly use a toothpick to poke food out of the tiny holes in the grate on the KidCo. With the Green Sprouts the holes are bigger and food rinses right out. --Stainless steel both on the turning part that crushes the food and on the grate that the food squishes through. (As for the reviewer who had this 'explode'... it must either be a fluke or she was grinding counterclockwise instead of clockwise. I have never had that problem with this mill, nor do I see how it would even be possible.) Keep in mind that this isn't a blender and food will end up a bit textured. But for what it claims to do, the Green Sprouts carries through 100%.

This food mill doesn't make food really smooth, which you might want if your child is under 6 months, but it does a great job with quickly mashing foods provided they are cooked well to begin with. It does seem to separate out thick skins or pieces of a vegetable that are too hard for a baby to eat, but it's not perfect in this regard (ie. with a sweet potato, I've found bits of skin that made it into the mash, though for the most part, the skin was separated). Overall, I've found it very useful to make small amounts of food, especially while traveling. It looks great, is very easy to clean, and kinda fun to use. But if you're looking for a smooth puree, this is not going to cut it for you.

I have the kidco version in white. I use it every day multiple times. I adore it but it is small and I had some anxiety that it was made prior to pbc awareness and might have bad chemicals, so purchased this second version. It arrived and looked fabulous - great color, bigger bowl - exact copy of the kidco. BUT......Wow is it not the kidco. For some unknown reason it comes apart - dare I' say EXPLODES - every time I puree. Although it twists together, for some reason the design lets it slip backwards and literally explode in my hands every time I use it. As a busy mom trying to puree for her kids, 1/2 mashed carrots all over my stove is a bloody nightmare. Also, the suction loop gets too lubricated and it drips enormous amounts of liquid through the base. Overall I would say it is a complete disaster. How can it look so similar and act so differently? Don't know, but don't say I didn't warn you!!addendum: I just want to add that it is possible there was some problem with mine if other folks are not having problems. This type of food puree machine is completely indispensible to a mom making her baby's food. When I let them know I was having a problem with the product, they were BAR NONE the best customer service department I have ever encountered. I hope mine was a weird one. But the kidco version was my back-up when this one ended up being such a problem, and it has never exploded or leaked.

sometimes a cigar is just a cigar,

This grinder is great. I was hesitant to purchase any grinder of any brand because they all have mixed reviews. My mom would not let it go, and insisted I was doing my baby a disservice by feeding him "jar" or "pouch" meals. She bought this one for me even though I warned her of the negative reviews. I am glad she did. I have no other baby food mill experience so I cannot say this one is the best or worst. I am pleased with this one and would recommend it to others. The people that gave it negative reviews?? I don't know. I have ground peas, chicken, pork chops, potatoes, carrots. It all grinds perfectly. I will sometimes remove the tube to shake up the food then grind again. If it explodes on you, you are pushing tooooo hard. Be easy. The breakdown : Simple, not a lot to it. Not complex. Easy to assemble and use. Even my husband (with some guidance) can use it. It's quick, heating up the pouches of food in water takes longer than grinding our own food. Easy to clean, it comes all apart, all the pieces fit in the dishwasher and bottle basket. This is important to me. If its a pain to clean I will not use it as often. I will dread the process. This is not the case here. I am not an organic super mom. I do think the home cooked meals are healthier than any pouch or jar foods that must contain some preservatives. My son likes the food much better. He tolerates the pouch meals but seems to really enjoy the ground up food. This will save me money, its more appealing (some baby food is like canned cat food) and convenient. I can toss this in the diaper bag and use it wherever we go. It is inexpensive, not a huge investment. I am not ambitious enough to freeze gobs of ground up meals so no way can I see paying $100+ for an electric baby food mill. If your on the fence like I was then buy it at a place where it can be returned easily. I however am keeping mine!

Hard to operate, hard to clean, leaks liquids, and can't handle harder foods,

We were extremely disappointed with this food mill. We expected to be able to quickly and easily make baby food out of whatever we were eating, but we never found much use for it. It's hard to operate and hard to clean, but we could live with that if it made good baby food; it doesn't. We also couldn't take it out anywhere, because itleaks liquid from mashed food out of the bottom. It also can't handle harder foods (like, say, well-cooked Brussels sprouts, or any leafy vegetables). Basically, if you can't mash it into baby food with a fork, you can't use this on it. If you add a mix of harder and softer foods, it will push the soft stuff through the grate and compress the hard food into a little patty, and the juices will run out of the bottom.

I like this for making baby food for my 8 month old. It makes a good consitancy for a baby that has already started with some solids. It won't get it fine enough for a new eater. The only thing I don't like about it is that it leaks out the bottom so you have to use it over the sink. I bought it hoping to take it to restaurants but I can't imagine doing that if it leaks.

Great baby food maker,

My wife purchased this food mill for our 8-month old daughter and it has been a great baby food maker. It is very user-friendly, and my wife likes the fact that the blade part is made of metal. This food mill does not puree food completely; there are small chunks of food, and it has not been an issue. This perhaps may be the perfect product to make foods for those babies who are in-between eating stages. It works wonderfully with pasta, fruits, vegetables, etc. The only downside is that it leaks when we grind fruits and vegetables. We have had to place a plate underneath the mill to collect the liquids. Overall, it is a great product, and I would recommend to other parents with young babies. It is also very easy to clean. We are not tree-huggers but it is nice to know that we are not adding harmful chemicals to our baby's food.

I really like this product and I use it often. I've used it for raw bananas and avocados and for cooked carrots and sweet potatoes. I would say it gets food a little finer than mashing it with a fork, which is just right for my 6 month old baby. Baby food does not have to be super pureed. If I have only a small amount of food, I just use a fork since it's quicker, but to puree the whole sweet potatoe/avocado or whatever I would use the mill. Please read the instructions and follow them. I have never had 'an explosion' like another reviewer said.

Just Recycle,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: green sprouts Baby Food Mill, Green (Baby Product)
We previously had a KidCo baby food meal. It worked great. We decided to try the Green Sprouts because it is eco-friendly. Well, it belongs in the recycling container. The blade/strainer does not stay in place when grinding foods. We have cleaned up many messes as a result of the blade/strainer popping out. The seal is marginal at best. Grinding anything with moisture causes liquid to flow down base and on to the countertop. Finally, the mill leaves a good portion of unground food. Easily an inch worth of compressed food is left unground. Very disappointed. It might make great compost, minus the steel blade.

Love this food mill!,
This review is from: green sprouts Baby Food Mill, Green (Baby Product)
I didn't want to spend a fortune on a baby food processor unless I knew for sure that making my own was going to work out. I saw this food mill and thought I'd try it out since it's super inexpensive. I kept making my own baby food but I never bought the fancy processor - this mill does the job. If you're looking for a really smooth puree, you're going to be dissapointed. This produces the same consistency you'd get with a potato ricer, which worked fine for us. It says it separates skin from fruits but it leaves lots of little bits of skin, so I always just removed the skin first. Be sure to put a paper towel under the mill if you're grinding something juicy like pears. And don't use it on Mango. It's stringy, doesn't puree well and leaves the mill a mess! This mill is easy to clean and is dishwasher safe. Love it!
