Great Movie, but a little disappointing,
This review is from: .hack//G.U. Trilogy (DVD)
This was a good movie, but trying to cram 3 video games into 1 theatrical feature was a bit too much. If you didn't play any of the .hack//G.U. video games then you might have a hard time figuring out the finer mechanics of what was going on in the movie. Many of the main characters weren't included like Sakubo and Endrance, only Haseo, Atoli, and Ovan used their epitaph powers, and several of the main enemies were over shadowed or not shown at all. Plus, it skipped most of the games key parts and pretty much remastered cut-senes to make most of the movie. Basically the movie focused only on Haseo, Atoli, and Ovan. Not that its a bad thing, but there was so much more than what was portrayed.
The graphics were amazing and the fight scenes were awsome.

To start things off, I played the games over and over and watched the anime. So when a movie version was coming out, I was thrilled. Now for the DVD itself, the menu contains 4 options:Play, Chapters, Set Up, and Extras Now of course the first two are obvious, but there needs to be some explaining on Set Up and Extras just in case there are people wanting more details. Set Up has only, now I repeat ONLY Japanese dub, so if your expecting to hear the English Dub forget about it. As for Subtitles it's there in English, but in yellow font. The yellow font kinda bugs me, however if you're used to watching animes, it's fine. As for Extras, there is the; Parody Mode, which is not related to ".hack//G.U. TRILOGY", any real organization and people. It just changes the dialog in the movie to be comedic. I enjoyed this little extra. It's kinda like the 4koma you see in the GU games. Promotional 1, 2, and 3. Special TV Program: Making of the Theatrical Feature. This one has the Director, Hiroshi Matsuyama, and Haseo VA, Takahiro Sakurai just talking about the development of the movie and games in general. What really surprised me was second people who presented the Trilogy trailer to the audience. It was Tomoyo Mitani. I know this isn't big, but I never seen a photo of her. At one point in time, I figure her voice was just a computer synthesizer or whatnot. Image Board Gallery and Trailers Now for the main thing itself, the movie. This movie focuses on just Haseo, Atoli and Ovan. Most of the games character don't really make it in for screentime. If you played the games, it'll revolve around Rebirth, skips Reminisce, and straight into Ovan's purpose. Also if you never played Vol. 3 Redemption and don't want to be spoiled, avoid reading this part *Spoilers* Cubia is NOT in this film. I'm just putting my thoughts on why this wasn't in. In the extras, the director said that they were developing this movie, while also doing Reminisce. So to be able to stay on length, they just didn't add it. And again, this movie just focuses on the three characters as mention. *Spoiler ends* This movie should be watched by fans as we know the full story, but if your new some parts may be confusing and have you thinking "wth whats up with this depressed girl". Overall I enjoyed it.

.hack//g.u. trilogy is an adaptation of 3 games that I'ves never played. However, I love all the .dothack anime, but thought the old games had an awesome, crazy story but were too boring, time-consuming, mediocre, and expensive, so I just never committed to the G.U. games at all.
Well, having watched all the anime, and researching the general story of the old games, I was still missing 1 thing: The true ending to .dothack//roots. I thought that roots was an adaptation of the trilogy, but it turns out it was a prequel! Well, the creators decided to put together this awesome movie, that is surprisingly coherent. Sure, it feels rushed sometimes, but you can forgive that knowing the source material was 3 full rpgs packed into an hour and a half. I see many people miss the vast amount of side characters that were no doubt left out, but I've never played the games, so I can't miss them. The graphics are awesome and the action is over the top, and is the best action sequences I've seen in dothack yet. Would have liked a english dub with the Roots cast. I doubt you would like it if you've never heard of dothack.

Haseo's charecter is simplified.,

I think some other reviews have pointed this out, but the movie changes some of the story line to fit 3 games within a two hour movie. I understood what was going on at the whole time, but my friends who had never played .hack//G.U. were confused and I had to explain as the story was going on.
My favorite charecter in the games was not in the movie and it saddened me. (Endrance) However my main problem with the movie was that it simplified Haseo's charecter so much that Haseo seems like an insane sociopath. They really made him seem like an utter jerk with no redeeming qualities like in the games. I enjoyed the movie, but the games capture the story line so much better. The graphics were good and the parody mood was hilarious.

.Hack//G.U. were wonderful games (I've played them before) but this just doesn't live up to the full potential. First off they altered to much of how the story went in the games (Exmp. How Haseo got his X-th form). I can understand why they had to, its because they had to cram 3 games(one month with no side Quests, give or take) into a 2 hr 11 min movie. Still I liked it enough to buy it so I do suggest watching it, for it is an okay movie.

It is a great movie. I recommend it. Remember that this movie is very sentimental. VERY sentimental. I give it a 4 instead of a 5 for a few reasons:
>> We never really get a feel for the scope of the game world (offline or online). >> The film shows too much of Haseo's forehead while his epitaph is doing the fighting. >> It would probably have given more closure to the ending if we could have seen some dialog with Aura. Instead, we only hear her voice.

An epic tale of the GU universe!,

An amazing movie with beautifully rendered fight scenes, heart grossing story, and an amazing soundtrack this movie is a must watch. Though following the basics of the story from the games much is shortened, left out, or brushed past to progress to the main points. Side characters, plots, and enemies aren't present so if your expecting the game's story verbatim your in for a new experience. Which is what makes this so great. Your not getting the game watered down, your getting something new, something incredible, a true dot hack masterpiece.

If you've played the game and watched the /GU series that is the prequel to the games, then you will know exactly what happens in this movie. People giving this item a bad review because it doesn't cover enough need to realize this is ONE movie for 3 games. They manage to fit nearly 90% of the game in this movie. The only thing they don't talk about are the tournaments, but, they show it without explaining it.
For .hack fans and especially fans of the GU universe, this is a recommended buy. Graphics and dialogue are great. I didn't watch the dubbed version; but, who would when you can watch it in its natural glory?

.hack quality + anime mega-violence = two thumbs WAY up!,
This review is from: .hack//G.U. Trilogy (DVD)
This movie is a beauty from start to finish. It removes a lot of the story points but how else can you make a movie without it being 50-60 hours? Cramming three games into one movie seemed like a hard enough job. I'm only miffed a little cause Sakaki only seems like a nuisance and not a pain in the neck like he should be. The combat sequences are beautiful but do not dull the actual story unlike a spiky haired emo I know...
Haseo proves he's not angst and rage, though they do seem to get the job done for him. Well, until [This part is censored for plot relevance] and [see prior] and he proves [you get the idea] etc. I had expected, with it being condensed and all, Ovan would be more direct. How wrong I was! He maintains his normal status, more so than the other characters.

Must buy for .hack//G.U. fans,

To sum up 3 games into a 2 hour-ish segment is a hard thing to do. You have to make sure you include important parts, as well take out a lot of side story's to make the time frame.
Well they did this well, they took out some of the minor people (like piros the 3rd) and its about the main idea of the story. They changed some of the scenes from the games, but i like the change. It's a great movie, and a definite buy. I have been a big .hack fan(all the games, animes, books, etc.) and i would get mad if they changed the story of one of the games for no point. Again it keeps the general idea, and they do it really well. It is one of my favorite movies now. A+ buy for fans of .hack, and fans of anime style movies. |
