5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing music from an amazing anime, November 17, 2005
By
Darksilver (Bloomington, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: .hack//Sign Original Soundtrack 1 (Audio CD)
I love the anime .hack//sign, so when I saw this CD at a local music store, I jumped at the chance to buy it. This CD contains the opening and ending themes, and a good deal of the background music.
1. Yasashii Yokae: The ending theme. It's a nice song, and easy to learn the lyrics to. It's the only song in japanese on the CD.
2. The World: The very first song we heard in the show, it played during the first part of the first episode. It's a song that reflects what it must be like for some of the players in the world. "Do you call it solitude? Do you call it liberty?"
3. Kiss: A quiet and beautiful song, it never fails to make me happy when I listen to to.
4. Key of the Twilight: A song for Tuskasa. It is one of the songs we hear most often. The vocals give the feeling that the person singing it misses something dearly, and wants only to get it back. "The key to open the door is in your hand, now take me there"
5. Valley of Mist: This song has three very different sections in it. This song feels like it is almost hiding something from us.
6. Where the Sky is High: A majestic song, it mirrors the vastness and majesty of The World itself.
7. Fake Wings: It reminds you of someone who acts strong, but inside really just wish someone would help her. "Dear my love, sweet morning light, wait for me, you've gone much farther, too far"
8. Interlude: Another happy song. The flute and bells cheer up the song, and you feel like whatever comes next has to keep getting better.
9. Fear: As the title suggests, this is a lonely and tense song. A sharp contrast to "Interlude," it is cold and sad.
10. Aura: The lyrics suggest someone both powerful and powerless at the same time. You feel that this person holds great pwoer over someone else, but she cannot suvive without this person. "But you can't see the sun ever in the darkness. It does not much matter to me"
11. Before Dawn: A nice song, but not a great as what we've heard up to now. It's quiet and sweet, but it just doesn't come close to the level of emotion that some of the other songs have had.
12. Foreigners: And upbeat melody, a South American beat, and and a set of bells make this song a great one to dance to. It just makes you want to get up and dance around the room.
13. B.T.: A sad song, the violin and piano duet really make for a beautiful melody. It relfects a mature side of everyone that comes out sometimes, whether we want it to or not.
14. A Stray Child: A sweet song, it seems to be someone crying for a loved one to come back. "Now you're too close to the pain, let all the rain go further. Come back and kiss me in vain"
15. Sit Beside Me: It's about time we got a another make-you-feel-happy song! That's exactly what this song does, it gives a beat that make you smile.
16. Magic and Sword: It has an almost playful feeling of tension, as odd as that may sound. Another good one to dance to, it's quick tempo makes it feel playful and energtic, while the melody gives the feeling of tension.
17. A Bit of Happiness: The title doesn't quite fit, the song doesn't really reflect that much happiness. It is almost regretful.
18. Silent Life: This song goes from a lone vocalist to a involed song filled with many different part playing at any one time, it feels like life coming from loneliness and sorrow.
19. Obsession: The black sheep on the CD, a very modern song full of electronic beats and a the feel of a remix. The opening credits. "How come I must know where obsession needs to go?"

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks for any program ever--anime or otherwise, May 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: .hack//Sign Original Soundtrack 1 (Audio CD)
Emily Bindiger was a brilliant choice on Kajiura's part to sing the vocals for these songs. Her voice perfectly complements the instrumentals, despite their multitude and the changes in style and pacing.

Music is an important and oft-neglected part of any successful show, and while some programs will include songs that fit the overall theme of their show, few go the extra mile as .hack did, in having the song lyrics themselves participate in story-building. Bindiger's vocals and Kajiura's instrumentation are never so intrusive as to obscure the action or voices, but they supply a thematic undercurrent, that is able to hold up the story all by itself during the quiet moments.

While not every song can stand alone (which would have earned the album a five star), this album remains a touchstone of how to get a television score right. A must buy for any diehard .hack fan, or lovers of inventive, lyrically imaginative music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musically innovative and full of wistful melancholy, December 1, 2009
This review is from: .hack//Sign Original Soundtrack 1 (Audio CD)
I love .hack//Sign and am a huge fan of Yuki Kajiura's work, one of the most memorable aspects of dot hack is the music, it works with the beautiful emotion of the landscapes and art to truly bring the story to life. Most of the songs are just as powerful or more powerful out of context. This CD evokes the deep emotional and existential questions central to .hack and continues to delight and inspire after years of heavy listening. A few highlights;

2. The World: A beautiful tortured vocal piece sung by a women's choir, dark and mysterious. One of the most beautiful pieces on the CD.
4. Key of the Twilight: Memorable, fast-paced and emotional. A beautiful composition for all-female voices, I hear something new with every listening.
5. Valley of Mist: Rich and fluid, this song is a journey. Slower, gentle, swelling, melody lines are juxtaposed against fast and insistent percussion.
6. Where the Sky is High: An embodiment of nature's beauty, though more free and joyful than the others, like flying through green mountains and valleys.
7. Fake Wings: Simple and powerful, a delicate cry of loss and faint hope.
11. Before Dawn: A softer more passive emotion, feeling the joy of simplicity. After the passion when you have to sort through what has happened. Piano.
12. Foreigners: Agile and lively, makes you want to dance, but still has that dark side which characterizes this CD
13. B.T.: Beautiful and sad, I get goosebumps every time I listen. Displays a wider, more mature range of emotion. Violin/Piano duet.
18. Silent Life: The first real ray of unrestrained hope on the CD, complex and growing, it is like the journey to the top of a mountain then looking into the valley below.
