Book Description

January 1, 1998
More than any other book written by Rabbi Kahane, 'The Jewish Idea' expreses the axioms which were the essence of his being. The fundamentals of Jewish faith which are set forth in this volume, such as humility, faith and trust, kindness, revenge, self-sacrifice, and sanctifying G-d's name, were not abstract theories, but the day-to-day guidelines of his life. This book reveals the erudite scholarship and mastery of Torah which was the source of Rabbi Kahane's untiring activities. This volume also has detailed indexes, by subject, Biblical source, Talmudic source and Midrashic source, for both volume one and volume two.

About the Author

Rabbi Kahane was born in New York City in 1932. He studied at the Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn, and was ordained in 1956. The same year, he completed New York Law School. He founded the Jewish Defense League in 1968, which spearheaded a campaign of Jewish activism which led to the emigration of tens of thousands of oppressed Jews from the Soviet Union. He went to live in Israel in 1971, and became a Member of the Israeli Parliament from 1984 to 1988. His widely read columns appeared in the weekly 'Jewish Press' from 1961 to 1990.

The Jewish Idea, Vol 2, p. 783. In this exile of ours, which began nearly two thousand years ago, the Messiah is ready and waiting to come today if we only listen to God's voice and follow in His ways. We can, thus, understand how R. Akiva could have thought that Bar Kochba was really the Messiah, when only sixty years had passed since the destruction of the Second Temple... In this exile, G-d did not fix a specific time for the redemption; rather it depends on our deeds, and especially on faith and trust in G-d.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's A Great Book for Reaching Greatness, May 23, 2000

This review is from: Or hara'ayon = The Jewish Idea, Volume 2, indexes to both volumes (Hardcover)
In The Jewish Idea, volume two, Rabbi Kahane tells it like it is. He writes in his usual dynamic, forceful style, but this time his scholarly credentials come to the fore, with citations from rabbinical literature that back up his views.

This is must reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Index Covers Both Volumes!, November 7, 2000
This review is from: Or hara'ayon = The Jewish Idea, Volume 2, indexes to both volumes (Hardcover)
If you want to delve into Jewish theology, this is the book for you. Volume Two of The Jewish Idea covers aspects of Jewish thought not covered in Volume One and most important, the index by subject and rabbinic source citations at the end of the this volume covers Volume One, too.

Note that Volume One is not indexed separately because it is only half of the original Hebrew, so anyone who wants to be able to search by subject, needs both volumes.

I highly recommend this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Read Volume One, You Must Read Volume Two, May 23, 2000

Chana Itzkowitz (Jerusalem, Israel) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Or hara'ayon = The Jewish Idea, Volume 2, indexes to both volumes (Hardcover)
Volume Two of the Jewish Idea tackles topics that only Rabbi Kahane dared to deal with. Where volume one deals primarily with topics in Jewish theology for their own sake, volume two applies the principles he has developed to "politics."

Among the topics Rabbi Kahane discusses in volume two are the Messianic period, the destiny of the Jewish People and of Israel.

For anyone who wants to know what Rabbi Kahane really espoused -- this book tells all!
