Interesting, but far from original. (Hed)Pe sounds very much alike all those "rap metal" bands out there. The same screeching vocals, detuned noise guitars and funky beats are undeniably present; the reggae singing is a nice addition, though.

This is (hed) p.e. before they were technically "metal." This is more like hardcore punk, although some songs are pretty heavy. The hip-hop here is much more 'street' and 'real' than on Broke, with better flow and delivery, and the funky basslines are great. The closing song here is a much better ending than "The Meadow" on Broke, with its bongos and reggae beats, and there aren't any fillers like "Pac Bell." What really is awesome here are the lyrics. Songs like "Firsty" and "P.O.S" are hilarious because of the lyrics, and "IFO" is realistic in its view on visitors from outer space. Other themes are covered such as racism, and drug use. Beware though, this has real rap in it, so step lightly, because typical rap words are used, and M.C.U.D. spews swears like rain, even against a quiet backdrop! However, it's a great effort. Much better than Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, or Papa Roach(who no longer 'rap'). I suggest getting this and Broke(not as good, but still tight), then Snot's Get Some, then Incubus' S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can I get an "Awwww Yeahhh! " ?, May 12, 2000

This disc f'in rocks my world. Thanks to the Strangeland soundtrack, I felt the desire to check these guys out further... and I was not disappointed! (hed)pe brings forth the inevitable Limp Bizkit comparisons, and LB fares _Badly_ in this light. With good solid rapping, great lyrics and some booty-bouncing, hip-hop/metal riffing, (hed)pe emerge as the better band in terms of musical talent and lyric writing.

The album rocks from beginning to end. "POS" and "Ground" lead smoothly into "Serpent Boy", which is explosive and features some awesome transitions from hyper-rapped verses to mega-rock-riff choruses. "Tired of Sleep" features a more laid back groove laid down over eerily haunting high pitched guitar licks.

Other excellent tracks are "Schpamb", "Ken 2012", "33" and "Hill". "IFO" has fast become one of my favorite, featuring some of the most awesome lyrics I have ever heard. It sounds like the X-Files episode written by the staff of High Times!

All in all, this band can hold it's own against any of the new metal bands out there, Rage Against the Machine included. Rage owns, but so does (hed)pe. I think the future for these guys is blindingly bright, and I would highly recommend this record to people out there with open minds who don't blindly cling to allegiance with one band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Think Cypress Hill meets Sublime meets Korn., July 8, 2000
This review is from: (hed) P.E. (Audio CD)
(hed) p.e. : Not your typical rapcore band. The music on here is quite a trip and has a thousand obvious influences. From the heavy (Schpamb, P.O.S.) to the laid back (T.O.S.) and to the just furious (Ground, Firsty) this cd has it ALL. MCUD is probably one of the best rappers out there, his lyrics flow smoothly and are definetly more daring and bold than, let's say Fred Durst. A lot of this cd is a grab bag of funk, metal, alt rock, rapcore, etc. It is really hard to pick a favorite song. If you like this band, try Snot, Crazy Town, Kottonmouth Kings and Cypress Hill.

This Cd is off the hook. Darky is one of the best songs ever written. When they drop the new bomb in 2000, pick it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars True rapcore, May 8, 2000
This review is from: (hed) P.E. (Audio CD)
When I think of rapcore the band that first comes to mind is (hed)pe, rather than say like Limp Bizkit. I've had this cd for nearly three years and it still never fails to amaze me. Featuring dark and angry music dominated by freaky guitar work, laid-back grooves and incredible scratching, this cd is a maelstrom of sounds. The vocals are presented in a hip-hop style accompanied by explosions of aggression. This band reminds me of Incubus for their talented musicianship and eclectic music, and Korn for their anger and aggressiveness. The only problem with the cd is that the song structures need to be a bit tighter and the drums and bass are kind of weak. Otherwise a great cd showcasing a band with unlimited potential who will blossom into something truly special. Fave tracks include "Serpent Boy", "P.O.S.", "Darky", "Circus", "Ken 2012", and "IFO". Other great rapcore bands to check out: Frontside, E-Town Concrete, Spine, Clown, Nonpoint, 51b Bag, and Engine No. 9. Also check out (hed)pe's upcoming new release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funk Metal at its Very Best, March 10, 2000

(hed)p.e. are such an amazing band. They have six members, and the energy generated by them is so incredible live and in the studio, its amazing that they are not as big as Korn or Limp Bizkit. MCUD's vocals are energized, but kind of stoned. It has that whole kind of warmth vibe to it. I can listen to this straight without changing tracks, but some songs are better than others. My personal favorites are Ken 2012, Serpent Boy, 33, and Tired of Sleep (T.O.S.)Tired of Sleep has such an amazing bass line to it, it really makes the song twice as good. DJ Product goes up on my favorite DJ list now, along with DJ Skribble, DJ Kilmore of Incubus, and DJ Greyboy. His scratches don't sound like they're being computerized, but that he is really a master on the turntables. The band would easily fit into the categories of Funk Metal, Rapcore, or Pimpcore. Bands I would recommend if you like this are Incubus, Snot (RIP Lynn and Dobbs- Snot Crew Forever), and also, try mixing a Sublime song with a Korn song on a tape or CD, it'll sound really cool. The only downside of (hed)p.e. is their record label. They are singed to Jive Records, the same label as Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and *N Sync, the worst artists in the world. Anyway, enjoy the G-Punk.

When it came out it was so unique and just mind blowing. I still listen to it often. It is probably my most favorite cd of all. If I had to leave all but one behind, this would be the keeper. Although more recent releases from them have disappointed me tremendously. If only they would have stuck with whats on this cd and not break out into "new" direction. Hate to say it but its almost as if they are selling out to a more pop crowd now. I wish they'd stick with the hardcore G punk. This is a must own revolutionary to the industry cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just get this cd, November 16, 2000
This review is from: (hed) P.E. (Audio CD)
This cd can't be described in words. (hed) PE deserves crazy props for this album. God, every song on it is good. Unfortunately I know these guys are gonna be big someday like Limp Bizkit, but oh well, enjoy it while it lasts. A 5 star effot from a 5 star band. Also check out Limp Bizkit's first cd, Snot, and Amen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic definition of what rap rock should be, November 2, 2007
By
This review is from: (hed) P.E. (Audio CD)
To put some context on my view on the band, probably necessary as my view is reasonably strong, half of their records are great and a couple didn't click with me at all.

But this one is perhaps one of the greatest records I have ever heard. Me being a fan of early rap like Public Enemy, and modern hard rock like Nine Inch Nails, Sevendust, Living Colour, rock rap should generally grab me. And it wasn't until I heard this mob that I was taken at all.

It's intelligently written, played and sung with intense passion, the guitar riffs and general playing has all the energy and agression of someone like Sevendust - just powerful.

Hard to explain it as there is not really a lot to compare it too - a couple of Bionic Jive tracks maybe, but nothing like this.

Tracks which describe the record well are "Hill", "IFO" - this is a masterpiece", "Serpent Boy", "Ground"

brilliant

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky, fresh, and metallic -- serve it up raw!, October 12, 2005
By
This review is from: (hed) P.E. (Audio CD)
When (hed) released their debut LP it was right at the height of the "Nu-Metal" craze, largely propagated by Korn, but it still stands out head and shoulders above what is mostly music made by angry, self-absorbed wannabes. I guess the closest group to them are early-era Incubus, although (hed) are probably a little more aggressive. Despite the band knowing exactly how to land a heavy groove, the thing that really sets them apart is the astonishing charisma and vocal talent of their dynamic lead singer, Jahred; a truly versatile frontman mixing up speedy raps, guttural growling, and melodic singing. All the tunes have that distinctive (hed) sound (Korn-esque chord voicings, clean-ish detuned riffs) which remains across all their albums and is testament to their craft. Stand out songs include `P.O.S.', `Serpent Boy', `Darky', and `IFO'. If there's a problem with the album it's that some songs drag and occasionally sound a bit `cut & paste'. But it has a pretty good raw sound and sometimes that unfocused air lends itself for the better; you get the impression these are young boisterous chaps and must be a hoot to watch live! (Which they are.) In summary, a really tight-knit unit offering something unique, energetic and attitude-soaked. Recommended!
