I bought the box set several months ago, and I'm just now giving it some serious attention. To my ears the hi res stereo on the dvd IS the original mix and not the 40th anniversary one. I A-B'd the remix cd and the dvd of Morrison Hotel (the Doors album I know best), and then did an A-B with my ('94?) old remastered cd and the dvd.
The dvd sounds much closer in character to the original mix and not the anniversary mix. To my ears the dvd sounds much like the original remaster cd, except much more low end and not quite as thin-sounding. The new mix cd however is even louder than the hi res dvd stereo, I think mostly due to compression. Ray and Robbie are pushed way up in the mix on the anniversary mix.
Which one is for you? Depends. The original remaster sounds perfectly fine, and there will be no shortage of fans who prefer it still to the anniversary mix. In other words, the new mix could be reasonably labelled a casualty of the loudness wars. Some who want a fat bottom end to their sound will love the dvd. And some may prefer the in-your-face upfront sound of the new mix.
