This is a disappointing book. It is not a history tale about Australia & New Zealand. But a series of very short stories of the different characters.
It is not a book that would hold your interest - and say wow! I didn't know that.

This little book from about 1890 is an interesting perspective on the relatively short history of European (mostly British) occupation of Australia. It is well written and covers in lively style the characters of British governors, the economics of land purchase, the difficulties of free and convict settlers, the impact of the 1850's gold rush, and the extreme challenges of exploring the interior Australian deserts. As would be expected from a work of that period, its presentation of aborigines is no longer politically correct. Download it for a good read on the long flight to Australia..

I picked the book up on my Kindle to read during a cruise around Australia. I teach history in the USA and wanted to know more about how Australia began. Definitely not a light read, but full of details if that's your thing.

I was part way through reading this when I realized it was written in 1894, so the history was written from the prospective of Australia over 100 years ago. Excellent and very thorough history of the discovery and discovery and discovery again by several voyagers of Australia and then the settlement of the continent by various European nations. Very detailed and written as a history, not for pure entertainment value. Have always had interest in the settlement of Australia so I found it a very interesting read.

I had never really separated Australian and New Zealand history. Since we are going to New Zealand I wanted to know more about New Zealand. It illuminated the Maori/European conflicts and cooperation.

I am planning a trip and cruise this fall to Australia and this book gave me a better knowledge of their history and how much it is like the history of the U.S.

The book was interesting in that it is a snapshot of how history was written in the early 20th century, the book itself however seemed rather biased and doesn't add a lot of value to someone interested in learning a history of New Zealand without the blatant bias attributed to it.

The book becomes interesting on how it writes history, not the History itself.

Stories are informative. Language is a little immature. Gives a good pen-picture of some aspects of Australian history in the early years.
