This review is from: A history of Islam in West Africa (Glasgow. University. Glasgow University publications)
One of the earliest studies of Islam in West Africa, its development and influence on all aspects of social life in this corner of the continent.Trimmingham does a good job of placing Islam both in its historical context in African history and also in compiling historical documents from Arabic sources relating to ancient West African kingdoms and their conversion. Trimmingham was also reasonably knowledgable in Sufism and so when writing on the development of Islam in Africa was able to study it from the correct historical point of view. Well worth finding if you can. |
