Great Resource for Genealogists,
By
This review is from: A History of Marion County, South Carolina: From Its Earliest Times to the Present, 1901 (Hardcover)
This book has a long history of being THE book to consult when researching the families of Marion County South Carolina. This book has been invaluable to my own research and to many others. Mr. Sellars was born in the early part of the 19th Century and lived until just after the turn of 20th Century. His knowledge of the area and it's people was phenomenal. Exhaustive lists of Civil War rosters are also included and would be a great help to anyone searching for clues about their Confederate ancestors from the area. This book is expensive but it's well worth the price.

This review is from: A History of Marion County, South Carolina: From Its Earliest Times to the Present, 1901 (Hardcover)
I was thrilled to find out that this book of Marion Co., S.C. was still being published. I had seen many Genealogy facts in my research being referenced with this book. The majority of the information covers the 1800's. I have been in contact with a descendent of the owner of the local store back then. Mr. Sellers would interview the locals as they came to the store. He was an attorney of Marion Co. and knew many of the people and their families. He was undoubtedly one of the most educated men in the county. I appreciated when Mr. Sellers admitted when he did not know something or someone. This indicated to me his truthfullness and desire for accuracy. I especially enjoyed the personal stories and the maiden names of the wives. Mr. Sellers does not include all the families of Marion. However if he listed the one you are looking for you are bound to learn something new. I would not depend heavily on his information as we do with modern day records. There were not many vitial records required in the 1800's. He was going by his professional and personal knowledge, also what these people knew. But this book recounts these histories that are otherwise silent. Enjoy the journey.
