This review is from: M F horn: Maynard Ferguson's life in music
If the Angel Gabriel decides to form an orchestra surely Maynard Ferguson would be lead trumpet! This was yet another excellent book by Bill Lee. It provides wonderful insight into the truly extraordinary talent of THE greatest trumpet player of ALL time! But the book also shows what many of Maynard's fans already knew; that he was more than a great performer, he also provided inspiration and instruction to up and coming young musicians through his world-wide college clinics. The book also recounts many of the ups and downs of holding a band of highly talented side-men together on the endless "road" fraught with economic land-mines, as well as many of the successful gigs at Birdland, Jimmy's, etc. Amazingly, but not suprisingly, MF continues to perform, innovate, teach, inspire and provide us with his great talent today. This is MUST reading for aspiring jazz musicians, as well as jazz afficienados.
