1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible book about horror movies, January 12, 2011
By
This review is from: The horror factory: The horror films of Universal, 1931 to 1955 (Gordon Press film series) (Hardcover)
There doesn't seem to be a single Universal Horror movie that the creeps that wrote this book approve of (except Bride of Frankenstein and Frankenstein, of course). They even say Dracula isn't worth watching, House of Dracula they say is a joke, Son of Dracula is 'subject to the most strenuous outcries of incompetence' and so on (and on and on and on). All they do is criticize everything. They don't comment on the incredible set design, makeup or anything positive. It seems as if they'd realize the only person who would buy this type of book is someone who actually LOVES old Universal Horror movies and wants more insight into them, not fellow snobs who are disdainful of any and everything that isn't up to the level of Wuthering Heights. What is ironic is that the production values of the book are just as bad as they say these old movies are (all of which are classics that hacks like these could never even hope to emulate no matter what resources they had). First of all the book is written on a typewriter, with corrections in ink-pen....it's basically someones term papers from some snobby University that teaches you how to criticize but not how to actually do anything yourself. These are the kind of guys you'd like to beat up in a bar...or better yet, have the Wolf Man take care of (they'd be criticizing his makeup while they're getting their heads torn off). Skip this book...Bruce Dettman & Michael Bedford - go away.

Now for GOOD books on horror movies you might like, try Universal Horrors: The Studio's Classic Films, 1931-1946 or Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff: The Expanded Story of a Haunting Collaboration, with a Complete Filmography of Their Films Together which has just been expanded. They are both expensive, but after reading the poor quality Dettman/Bedford #$@% you'll feel as if you're getting a good deal and you are.
