Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4 The tone of this collection of 19 of Fisher's poems about mice, aided by Sandin's color pencil drawings of big-eyed mice, is slightly too precious. Lines like "You'd think a bear had broken in/ instead of just a Mousikin" (from "House Guest") or "curling together/ (as Mouselings do)/ rosy and dozy/ and squeaky new" (from "Surprise") create only the common image of cute mice and undermine the effect of some of her fine poems such as "Snow Stitches" ("That's the one/ whose footprints show/ like stitches in the new white snow"). Mice Are Rather Nice (Atheneum, 1981; o.p.), selected by Vardine Moore, contains four wonderful Fisher mouse poems, including "Snow Stitches," and offers a much richer and more imaginative look into the world of mice. Poems about mice/ can be rather nice/ but The House of a Mouse falls short. Kathleen Whalin, Public Library of Columbus and Franklin County, Reynoldsburg, Ohio
