Book Description

June 10, 2008
''El Husar is my first novel. Written in 1983 between two war articles, at that time I had no intentions to dedicate myself to writing literature, and published almost by chance by a publishing company with which I never maintained a good relationship, it has taken me almost 20 years to recover the publication rights. Now this novel surfaces again, finally to my liking, with a suitable revision, corrected of errors and lightened of some unnecessary adverbs and adjectives.'' -Arturo Perez-Reverte. Santos Sanz Villanueva

This review is from: El husar/ The Husar (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)

4.0 out of 5 stars Hu-wha? HuSAR, September 15, 2006
This early effort is not Perez-Reverte's best, but the promise of "Captain Alatriste" and the great swashbuckling narrative is clear. "El Husar" is difficult to explain, in a sense: the Napoleonic occupation of Spain written by a native Spaniard, from the perspective of a German (from Alscace) in Napoleon's army. The narrative is clear, single-person, lucid and beautiful as all Arturo Perez-Reverte is. A little gory for my taste; nothing is perfect.

The book is only available in it's original Spanish. I recommend it to those who like the era, more than those who like the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting., August 10, 2008

The style is overblown and the characters don't develop, but the book is interesting as the first novel of a man whose mature works are those of a superb writer. Some of the military vocabulary of the early 19th century is arcane and difficult but doubtless well-researched.
