5.0 out of 5 stars Ripley, February 13, 2002

Ripley's new CD Hypermobile is a surprisingly mature and sophisticated first album. It ranges from the seductively off kilter first track (in 6/4) "Treading Water", to the rocking "Wait" or "Hypermobile."

The band is truly a vehicle for Jessie S.K.'s fluid vocal style. Her highly controled meanderings remind me a bit of Throwing Muses - cramming lots of ideas into songs without loosing track of where it's heading. The simple guitar, strong base lines, and solid druming are propuslive without being intrusive.

Excellent but simple (this word keeps poping up) production makes this record a pleasure to listen to. I suspect they sound pretty much like this live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't sit still, March 20, 2002

Riff rockers will love the guitar; will nod along to the rhythm twins. Halfway through, indie rock archeologists will lose the Tanya/Kristin Beantown scene comparisons. Look out Olympia and beyond! The album is always melodic, sometimes hard, sometimes heavy, sometimes jangly, sometimes sexy, maybe even funny. Yeah, it's a little scary with those lyrics sent up by a sharp woman in a black dress... {hypermobile}, let it jump around in your cd player for awhile. You'll like it. It'll be good to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars No cliches, lots of feeling, February 13, 2002

After hearing Ripley play in Boston at a club called the Linwood, I knew I would snap up their CD when they produced one. I listen to it while cooking dinner and drinking a glass of red wine-it sets the right mood. Jessie's voice has soul and character. There's nothing cliched about the lyrics or tunes. I love the driving drum and bass tracks, too. You should get this CD so you can tell your friends you knew them back when!

5.0 out of 5 stars Into the Fire...Ripley's first venture, February 12, 2002

I love the voice, I love the style...Jessie Summa-Kusiak and Ripley has charisma....I love her effervescence, her wing dings and her hurt. Love the way she smiles in song like an old twisted piece of beat up metal, ditched and kicked around out on route 66. Young life lived in and loved in journeying foward, climbing reaching plugging into sockets out of reach of children. "Cursed" and spinning out of control...wondering woman and wonderful too....yes the metal's been scrunched but it's been tested and come out stronger and truer too. "It's only a body" not the title, is the proof in the pudding and she gives and gives. A spectacular first effort from Ripley....Out of the Spaceship and into the fire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD, Seattle's Best Band!, January 24, 2002

I have been waiting for Ripley's new CD after seeing them play live many times, and was not disappointed. HYPERMOBILE has the energy and dynamic feel that they have when they play live. Jessie's unique and haunting vocals compliment the driving bass and drumms. Each song has a definite feel to it and is evocative of mood and place. If you like artists like PJ Harvey and the Pixies you will like this band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dynamite!, February 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: {hypermobile} (Audio CD)
Having seen Ripley play at the Linwood in Boston last March I have been anxiously waiting for their CD to be released. The wait was worth it. This is one rockin' record! Jessie, Dan and Jeff have put together an amazing debut disc. But it doesn't stop with a hard-rocking power trio, the songs are about something and there's a depth to the lyrics. Sometimes moody and always emotionally powerful, the songs explore themes of love, life and relationship from an original point of view. And Jessie's voice is fantastic!

Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

What a great body of work. It's refreshing to hear music that's basic yet complex, and better than most veteran collaborations. This music is a pleasure to listen to.
