More About the Author

Ron Gilster was born in Vallejo, California in 1947. Which is the last time he actually lived in any one place for very long at all. Ron began his computing and technology career in 1965 in the Air Force, in which he took refuge from the draft, but ended up a Vietnam vet anyway. Over the years, he has been a punch-card machine operator, a computer programmer, a systems analyst, a database manager, a manufacturing production manager, a consultant for what was then a Big 8 accounting firm, an executive in the audio/visual and telecommunications industry, a college instructor and administrator, and, oh yes, a writer.

Ron has had a number of best-selling books, including his first "A+ Certification for Dummies," "CCNA For Dummies," "Cisco Networking For Dummies," and a dozen more. He lives in Spokane, WA and continues to write at least four books per year; the latest being "MCAS: Exam Guide."

5.0 out of 5 stars I Passed On The First Shot..Achieved a Score of 80%, June 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: i-Net+ Certification for Dummies (Paperback)
I just took the i-Net+ exam on June 23, 2000 and passed with a score of 80%! Ron Gilster, you got my vote! This book covered what I saw on the exam. An excellent CD-ROM comes with the book. The CD-ROM with it's difficult practice exams really helped top off my studies after finishing the book. I recommend you know your Networking for this exam as well. The exam is hard even though the book covered everything I as a human being couldn't remember everything (ie. my score of 80%). You have to read this book thoroughly and actively do the prep tests that are included after every chapter. And when your done all that load up the CD-ROM and practice, practice, practice! By the way, I took the Network+ exam the same day as the i-Net+. I scored an 88% on this. Required Passing score for Network+ is 82%. Now going to pursue my MCSE...Whoa!

Anonymous,

A+, Network+, i-Net+ Certified

PS: I gave a preliminary review of this book before taking the exam. See title "From some one who actually read the book"

3.0 out of 5 stars I-Net+ Certification For Dummies, June 24, 2000
By
This review is from: i-Net+ Certification for Dummies (Paperback)
Although this is a good book, providing an excellent summary of what you need for the CompTia I-Net+ exam, do not depend on it totally. Both the time for the exam and the pass mark required was incorrect, though the author does urge the reader to keep up to date with such matters on the web. The section on HTML did not cover enough to answer the exam questions, and the development section was vague about client and server-side programming languages. Although I took 3 closed book practice exams provided by the CD-Rom, and averaged 85% in each, I failed the exam, getting a mere 70%. [The pass mark was 73%]. Maybe I am a Dummy, but I used the A+ sister Dummies book and got 84% and 85% for the Core and Dos/Windows real CompTia exams. So be careful. I would recommend studying at least two different books, [very hard], as I did, to do well in the I-Net+ exam. All that said, Dummies books in general, and this book in particular, are value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book (but might not be enough)., January 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: i-Net+ Certification for Dummies (Paperback)
As with as the Dummies certification books, the i-Net+ book is the easiest to read for this CompTIA certification, it's a great review of the subject, and it provides a general idea of the scope of the test. I've used Dummies to pass the MCSE, A+, Network+, and i-Net+ tests (the last at 90%, first try). The subect is covered well and the self-tests are good. However, though I usually start with Dummies books (or Exam Cram), I don't recommend them as the only book to use to study for a certification. Always get a more detailed book with another point of view to follow the Dummies series. A Sybex, Osborne, or New Riders book can provide the additional depth before testing.
