Out of the Box - 1st Review
on December 18, 2012
This isn't a complete review, but since no one else has posted anything, I wanted to get something out there for others...
I got this for my 7 year old for Christmas & took a chance on seeing nothing other than the YouTube videos about it. Shipped very fast from TPA Store, so no worries there. I took it for a test drive before wrapping it.
First - the iPad version required IOS 6, so if you're thinking of using your original ipad (v1), you'll need to download the iphone app not the HD app. Once I got over that panic, things were better.
Setup was very fast. Find and install app..install batteries...turn on...look for wifi signal on your ipad...connect...run. It took longer to get out of the box than to get it up and running.
Pretty cool. I ran it around the house a little bit. Controls were responsive and the tilt to steer feature worked better than I had expected. It doesn't have an integrated picture or video gallery, so if you take photos, you can't just replay them immediately from the app. It ran on carpet OK, but a little slower of course.
It has a telescoping camera that is controlled from the app. again, very cool.
The video quality was good. Make sure you take off the little plastic protective lens cover that it ships with.
Wifi range - I didn't push the limits, but worked fine at 30' We have wireless gadgets all over the house, so I was worried about some interference, but didn't notice any.
Battery life - Don't know yet. Took 6 AA batteries and I've bought rechargables. Like most toys, I suspect we'll burn through them for the first few weeks and then it will taper off, so I'm not too concerned.
That's the dad review...if there's anything significantly better or worse after my son plays with it for a while I'll repost.
Post-Christmas update...7 year old son likes it. Is working with no problems - good wireless signal/range. He plays with it for about 20-30 minutes as a time. An update on the playback - there is a menu option to playback photos and video...it is not an issue.
