I was looking for a secure and very durable tripod mount for my iPhone and prowled the web quite a bit before I found the i.Trek Super Mount F-L(G). When it arrived, I was pleased to find that it was everything promised. The all-aluminum body is very lightweight, solid, and precision-machined. No junk plastic here. There are neoprene bits inside of the jaws to nicely cushion your phone. The handle spins to clamp your phone, and the action is smooth and of a fine pitch so that you have a lot of control of the grip level. The 1/4-20 tripod threads are located in two places so that you can orient your camera in portrait or landscape mode. It will accommodate phones of up to 5/8" thick, so you can keep your phone's protective case on the phone while using the mount (I use the Otter Box Commuter on my iPhone 4S). Very nice. And for $15? Wicked nice.

Overall very nice piece of hardware. Great for kickstand use, and hold the phone securely. Something I've found however is that the alluminum the thing is made of reacts with the touchscreen, making the phone thing a finger is permanently pressing on the screen or nav buttons. I am using the Samsung Skyrocket, which doesn't have much of a border to put the clamp on without at least some of it touching the screen, and also has the capacitive permanent buttons at the bottom (back, home, menu, search). The rubber pads don't mitigate the effect either. I put some Sugru on the pads and sides of the clamp, which seems to have helped somewhat, but I still get the occasional phantom screenpress.

I was trying decide between the F-L (long handle) and F-S (short handle) without much of a product description to tell me what the long handle is for. My best guess after receiving the product, was the long handle can be used as sort of a kickstand to be used on a flat surface. Anyway, that is how I plan on using it. The F-S trades the kickstand application for a smaller, more pocketable size (again, just guessing).

The product arrived quickly (Amazon Prime is so worth it, and no, there is no incentive from Amazon to mention that). It has machined aluminum construction with what appears to be neoprene pads on the gripping surface. Since this is meant to fit a wide variety of devices the gripping mechanism holds the phone or tablet front to back. I suppose it is possible to over tighten, which could crack glass. The packaging indicates that one should not use pliers to tighten the mount. Hand tight when attached to my Galaxy Nexus was more that sufficient to hold the phone steady on a tripod.

So why 4 stars and not 5? The aluminum seems cheaply milled, a little play in the handle (not in the grip) and squeaky threads. But, I'll take cheap aluminum over cheap plastic on almost any day.

It's small, lightweight, and most of all it works. It's great as the tripod mount, even better as a freestanding stand. Currently using this on my iPhone 4s, it works without a case, and with my otter box. I'm not one to give many items a 5 star rating, but this is exactly what I was looking for, and at the price, it's unbeatable.

I bought this to use in creating videos with my iphone. It is unusable since the materials trigger the touch screen so once it's clamped in, you cant use controls or focus.

To me, this is a 3-star item although I wouldn't scoff at someone who felt it is a 4. It's not possible to be a 5 because it's not tensioned in any way. I know where and how much pressure I can put on the phone because I replace the glass when my users break their company phones but barring that, I'd be guessing.

With the iPad, that problem's much worse: if you'll note in the pic, the device seat is square which is exactly what the iPad's outside edge isn't. This doesn't hold an iPad or Mini, safely.

So the description is a lie. And it gets worse: there's only one corner on a S4 that you can put in this - the upper left. Have fun navigating Android, upside-down!

The Kindle HD works but not wonderfully.

This product is specifically designed to clamp onto the screens of smart phones -- so why on earth would they pad the clamps with a material that would trigger capacitive touch screens? Tried this with an iPhone 5, and the phone responds as if there were a finger constantly pressing on the screen, rendering it useless. This is a ridiculous design oversight, and I'm not sure why other reviewers are willing to tolerate it.

Yes, you may have enough screen space at the edge of the phone to clamp on there -- there is with the iPhone 5 if you clamp it on backwards -- but if you clamp it off-center then the device won't remain upright and level on a tabletop, one of the appealing features of this design.

And yes, you can search out some other material to insert in-between, but then you risk that getting misplaced or falling off. Plus -- why do you need to hack the product to make it work as advertised? It's a shame because otherwise it's a great design. I'm going to return this one and keep an eye out for a version that isn't tragically flawed.
