Editorial Reviews

i am not is the debut release from Brooklyn-based janus, a fearless young chamber group made up three
like-minded and virtuosic musicians: Amanda Baker (flute), Beth Meyers (viola) and Nuiko Wadden
(harp). Since 2002, janus has commissioned and performed new works that break the bounds of traditional chamber music, and the wisdom of the group's experience is elegantly and artfully captured on i am not, an album that immediately sets janus apart as a singular ensemble.
Featuring the music of New York composers Jason Treuting, Caleb Burhans, Angélica Negrón, Anna Clyne,
Cameron Britt and Ryan Brown, i am not was tailored specifically for janus. The electrifying and
revelatory results challenge the listener at every turn: As the group flits effortlessly between genres, it conjures a soundworld that is untethered yet consistent, classic yet definitively 21st century. In this way, i am not manages to defy the longheld Debussy-ian idioms that typify flute/viola/harp music. Further pushing the trio into this unusual landscape is a deft use of sonic devices such as glass bottles, electronics, banjo and voice. Earthy and introspective, i am not is a fluidly formed and cohesive artistic whole woven together of nine unique designs. i am not was recorded in two sessions at the renowned Clinton Recording Studios in New York, NY, with Lawson White producing and engineering. 'i am not (blank)' by Jason Treuting was recorded at the So Percussion Studio in Brooklyn, NY.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first listened to 'i am not'. Usually, I am not (haha) a big fan of classical music but since this had gotten such great reviews all over the classical and "indie-classical" scene, I decided to give it a shot. Boy am I happy I did! This cd is one of the most pleasurable listening experiences I've had in a long while. The tracks flow from one to the other and within each is a wealth of gorgeous sounds that I'd never expect from an ensemble like this. I especially love Drawings for Meyoko where the trio flexes their vocal chords and sings a childlike tune (not sure what language it is). If you're looking for something creatively beautiful that you want to listen to over and over again, 'i am not' is a sure-fire bet!!

I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to janus' debut album "i am not." Filled with fluid musical lines, this charismatic ensemble has taken the conventional trio format and broken the boundaries of "standard" repertoire. It's also a great pleasure to hear so many wonderful emerging composers' works. Buy this album! "i am not" does not disappoint.

Just saw them at Cleveland State University. Talented...with good musical ideas...fresh and warm at the same time. As they are still very young, I look forward to hear more from them in the future.

The instrumentation of this group attracted me to the album. I only heard the first two pieces during the first time I listened, and I really liked the opening avant-guarde/speaking introduction in "I am Not" and was fulfilled in my expectation of beautiful ensemble, modern music with "Kaymaster". Unfortunately, the rest of the album dwelled on the Avant-Guarde aspect, and became so disjointed and discordant by the end that I was no longer enjoying it. I think this group has a lot of potential, but needs to focus on real musicality, which can certainly be achieved even while maintaining a modern viewpoint.
