Product Description

This wireless game controller sports classic a D-Pad and button layout reminiscent of retro 8-bit game consoles from the 80's and 90's. The 8-Bitty works with your iPad and iPhone to play apps using a game controller with real tactile input. It also works with Android devices as well! 8-Bitty supports iCADE's growing list of hundreds of retro game apps, including Atari Classics collection, Pac-Man, Super Mega Worm, etc. The 8-Bitty uses a completely open interface system, so that any app developer can easily add game support. Requires 2 x AAA batteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for iDevices, bad for Android September 2, 2013
The good:
Works as advertised on iPhones and iPads with programs that support it. Very little setup required. Even better with jailbreak apps such as emulators, which let you configure the controls. The jailbreak app Blutrol improves the app support tremendously by mapping buttons to presses on a specific part of the screen. Buttons are snappy and responsive. Nice D-pad. Lightweight and easy to fit in a pocket.

The bad:
-Very confusing choice of button mapping compared to the iCade. The leftmost buttons on the iCade correspond to the shoulder buttons and the start/select buttons on the 8-Bitty. This makes for annoyances on games that support the iCade but not button reassignment, such as Midway Arcade - e.g. fire on Defender maps to a shoulder button.
-If you're running stock iOS, the game has to specifically support the iCade.
-Phillips head screw over the battery door? Who thought that was a good idea?

The ugly:
As of September 3, 2013, due to changes in the Android bluetooth stack, the 8-Bitty is not supported by devices running Android 4.3, including the new Nexus 7. Huge bummer. If you have an Android device, make 100% sure that it supports your device and operating system before you buy.

Overall:
I bought this on sale at ThinkGeek for $15. It was a steal at that price, easy to recommend. $30 is a tougher choice, but it's worth it if you have an iDevice and games that support it, especially if you're jailbroken. Definitely do your homework if you're buying for use on an Android device.

This is a great idea! Like many people I love the old arcade games. This makes it almost like the good old days.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ruined by automatic button mapping... (iPad) December 10, 2013
Verified Purchase
The typical action buttons (A/B) are mapped to the shoulders. Imagine playing SMB with no thumb buttons...it sucks and there is no icade app to remap them. The build quality is fine...it's just plastic and stickers. The d-pad has the general Saturn shape and feel but it isn't Saturn quality because it's kinda spongy by comparison. I really like that it has the NES feel and considering how few options there are out there, it would have gotten 4 stars from me if I didn't have to shoot with L1 and jump with R1. :/

5.0 out of 5 stars Hello Super Mario Brothers! June 28, 2013

Works as advertised and even more options are to be had (Super Mario Brothers!) when you jailbreak/emulate. Feels like original NES controller. Get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good looking but... June 14, 2014

Doesn't work with most games & by default isn't mapped anywhere near logically. I often have to press the start key for my game's primary action button, which is nonsense. Still, it's not really the 8-bitty's fault. 4 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars good product but limiited use December 24, 2013

The product itself is well made and feels just like the old nintendo controllers. The only reason this doesnt get 5 starts is that is doesnt work with many emulators. nesemu works and a couple others. The blue ime app that is supposed to help doesnt on on 4.2 and later.
