This was a gift for my 9 yo daughter who is a major ICARLY fan. It was one of the few toys offered from this show so we purchased this and the other accompanying toys with it. They are durable but limited in the fashion switches. She did play with this quite a bit and did enjoy her time with the toys. I did think for the toy they were overpriced, but again, with limited ICARLY toy options we bit the bullet and bought it for her. We also purchased the other toys that go along with this doll which is probably necessary.

iCarly Fashion Switch Carly and Fashion Switch Sam action figures by Playmates Toys, featuring "funky vinyl fashions."
While wandering the aisles in a well-known and omnipresent national chain store the other day, I ran across the iCarly "Fashion Switch" figures. The store where I found them had "Carly" with a red jacket and "Sam" with a star t-shirt as the last two figures in stock. The price was a staggering (for me, anyway) $17.99 each! That was far too expensive to even think about picking up for my silly little toy photography hobby, but rather than forgetting about it, which is what I should have done, when I got home I fired up the computer to check 'em out online. Apparently both "Carly" and "Sam" are available in two different variations. The iCarly "Fashion Switch" figures by Playmates Toys are compatible with a Chat'N Fashion Interactive Play Set modeled after the iCarly TV show set. Placing the figures on the electronic set triggers a random assortment of recorded phrases spoken by the characters. The Chat'N playset, with its pre-recorded phrases, is apparently designed for children with limited imaginations; or, as the conspiracy theorist in me suspects, to purposely limit children's imaginative play. Anyway, if you're in the mood for a laugh, check out the universally negative reviews of the Chat'N Fashion Interactive Playset here at Amazon. I don't think I've ever before seen an Amazon product which has garnered 100% one-star reviews. The Chat'N set, which includes a "Freddie" (not "Krueger," sadly) figure, receives, unanimously, single star reviews. I found the iCarly "Fashion Switch" figures available for considerably less money online than in the store. I found "Carly" for as low as $7.99 (or $11.95 with free "Super Saver Shipping," which is a better value). For some reason "Sam" is more expensive, with $13.95 the lowest price I found. There are also some extremely expensive options online, including a 2-pack (Sam & Carly) for a staggering $44.99! I'm not sure why these toys are so expensive. The concept behind Fashion Switch Carly series is that these are mix-n-match dolls. The figures stand about 4-3/4 inches (about 12 cm) tall. The head, upper body, and lower body are each separate pieces. Unlike some other lines of mix-n-match dolls (like Pinky:st from Vance Project), the hair is not designed to be switched, and is permanently affixed. The feet are firmly attached to a round, white plastic base which cannot be removed. A metal contact embedded in the underside of the base activates the "talking" mechanism in the Chat'N Playset. The iCarly figures featured here include one head, two tops, and two sets of legs. No additional accessories are included. The iCarly figures are molded of a heavy vinyl. The pieces are solid and for the most part well-cast. The painted details are of a high quality. The fingers on the hands are detailed, and the non-movable arms are posed in expressive positions. The face mould and the painting combine to create a very "pretty" doll, and a cute caricature of the actress, Miranda Cosgrove, who portrays Carly in the television program. The pieces fit snugly together with tight seams, yet are reasonably easy to take apart. A few online reviews of these figures complain that "the heads fall off." Perhaps some people don't quite grasp the concept of "FASHION SWITCH" or Mix-n-Match play! Like, duhhh? My "complaint" about the fit of the pieces is that the neck has a triangular base where it fits into the body. The body has a triangular receptacle for the neck. This means there is only one position possible for the head -- facing straight forward. The head cannot be turned or tilted, as with other dolls, for more "expressive" or "interactive" poses. Due to the triangular neck connection, under normal play iCarly's head definitely does not "fall off." A quibble in this regard: while Carly's head looks correct with the purple top, the neck doesn't slip deeply enough into the red jacket top, leaving this combination with somewhat of a "giraffe neck" appearance. I imagine this means she has to be careful on dates at the drive-in. An additional quibble: I found the "red" Carly figure to be of somewhat better construction than the "green" figure. The pieces of the "green" figure did not fit together quite as snugly as did those of the "red" figure; also, the paint quality on the "green" figure was not as uniform, and there were some small imperfections in the casting, including on the green top and in the figure's hair. Okay, now here's the real deal: they call 'em "Fashion Switch" figures, but... YOU CAN'T SWITCH THE FASHIONS! At least, not between Carly and Sam. Unlike with, say, Pinky:st mix-n-match figures from Vance Project, where all the pieces are interchangeable among all of the DOZENS of characters and figures, the iCarly Fashion Switch "funky vinyl fashions" DO NOT FIT BETWEEN CHARACTERS! Parts from the two "Carly" variants swap with Carly; pieces from the two versions of "Sam" exchange with the other Sam. But Carly and Sam cannot share their wardrobe! It's not that the scale is off, or that the pieces couldn't have been made to be interchangeable. No, rather, Playmates Toys intentionally designed Carly's and Sam's outfits to be incompatible, using differently shaped pegs on each character's parts. Sam has a cross-shaped peg, and Carly features a trapezoidal peg (with a triangular neck peg). Thus, you can't switch the fashions between these "fashion switch" figures! Out of annoyance and spite more than anything else, I forcibly swapped the heads by the highly technical means of shoving a square peg into a round hole, so to speak. Similarly, Carly's trapezoidal leg peg can be force-fit onto the Sam upper body, although the process does not work the other way around, and the fit is not all that great. While the Carly figure is quite stable due to the permanently attached round plastic base, the Sam figure, despite the attached base, has a tendency to fall over backwards. As noted, the plastic base cannot be removed, and contains a circuit designed to activate the "talking" feature of the iCarly Nickelodeon Chat'N Fashion Interactive Playset Ultimately, I'm disappointed by the lack of "fashion switch" options in what could have been a fun series of figures. Items purchased: iCarly Fashion Switch Carly (red & green versions) and iCarly Fashion Switch Sam (red version), two from Amazon (free shipping) and one from affiliated seller.
