More About the Author

Hi. I've been writing about Macs, other computers, and software since dinosaurs ruled the earth. OK, it's actually been since 1987. I began writing for the late MacGuide magazine, and started writing for Macworld shortly thereafter. I was a Contributing Editor at Macworld from 1990 through 2004, and I still write for them. Over the years, I've also written for most of the other Mac magazines.

I wrote my first solo book in 1994, and wrote my first commercially successful book in 1997, JavaScript for the Web, Visual QuickStart Guide, written with my then girlfriend and now wife, Dori Smith. That book has been in print ever since, though we've revised it many times to match the growth of JavaScript and other Web technologies. As you can see on this page, I've written or co-written many more books, notably on Dreamweaver, Apple's iCloud and Keynote, and the Microsoft Office programs.

In late 1999, we moved from the Los Angeles area to the Sonoma wine country. It's a better place to live in general and was a fine place to raise our son. Now that he's grown, it's just us and our very excellent cat, Pixel, who always makes an appearance in each book.

iCloud:Visual Quickstart Guide contains clear illustrated step by step instructions for working with iCloud. I found no errors in the instructions. Everything I tried worked when I correctly followed the steps. (On page 10 there is a reference H in the text and the matching illustration is G, but I found no errors in any of the instructions I tried.)

iCloud:Visual Quickstart Guide begins with a good brief description of iCloud, it's requirements, and Apple ID considerations. Then there are the illustrated steps for setting up iCloud on iOS devices, on your Mac, your PC, and migrating from MobileMe. The next chapter gets you up and running with Mail, Notes, and Messages on your Mac and iOS devices. By the end of the chapter, only 46 pages, you will agree that you are up and running , and in no time.

You will have learned that, "One of the benefits of every iCloud account is a free address. All iCloud email accounts use the IMAP email protocol, so messages are saved on the server, and you can read, reply to, and mark your email as read from any device." I have a POP email account which does not work with iCloud, so I followed the iCloud:Visual Quickstart Guide instructions to set up an iCloud account. How to use the Mail program is outside the scope of this book, but it covers working with mail in the iCloud on the web which looks a lot like your Mac Mail.

iCloud Visual Quickstart Guide contains instructions for working with Mail, Contacts, and Calendars programs both with iCloud and in the iCloud program on the web. It also contains references to other alternative programs, for example on using iCloud with alternative calendar programs.

This is not a reading book. It is a doing book.

Visual Quickstart Guide

With the imminent demise of MobileMe, it's time more of us move to iCloud and Lion, but with Apple thrusting this upon us, not all of us feel comfortable changing the way we've done things with MobileMe for years. Fortunately this book will alleviate your fears and make you a master.

The book, although multiplatform, focuses primarily on the Macintosh usage. Each aspect of iCloud is covered: mail, notes, iMessage, contacts, calendars, reminders, iPhto, iTunes, backups, documents, and search functions.
Each chapter gives an overview with objectives and then clearly organizes the information with tips, screenshots and easy to read diagrams.

The audience for this is beginner and intermediate users, although since the service is so new, we are all pretty much beginners and can learn from this book.

Missing is troubleshooting ideas when things go wrong, but this is a "quickstart" guide and not a comprehensive manual.

iCloud is fairly straightforward and not a huge leap from MobileMe, but it is different and this book explains to both new users to the product and migrating users everything they need to know to be successful

Pros: Covers the transition to iCloud and all the functions it entails
Cons: Can't bring back the functions we miss in MobileMe!

This book really helps simplify the process of going to the Apple iCloud on your Mac or Windows PC, and your iOS devices. The ten chapters are well illustrated with screen shots and instructions explaining each of the services that are available and how you set them up. Simply look at the table of contents and see what the book addresses. The author, Tom Negrino, covers each of the features currently available in the iCloud including services that did and did not transition from MobileMe. I ran into a minor problem with setting up Notes on an iOS device and reported the problem to the publisher. The default account setting did not show up on one of my iOS devices but did on another. Some of my friends could duplicate the problem on their iOS devices. I had a nice long telephone discussion with the author and he could not duplicate my problem. We both did our best to resolve the cause of this problem without success. Regardless, it is only cosmetic and the author will address this in the future. The only other concern I had was that some of the screen shots in the paperback version of the book were small and difficult for me to read. However, the eBook and PDF versions do not have this minor problem. I give the paperback version four stars and the eBook and PDF version four and a half stars.

Tom Negrino has done us a great service by writing this manual. It is definitely a "do" book rather than a "read" book. I have been using iCloud since it debuted, however Negrino explained the inner workings of iCloud in a way I have not seen and offers the read a step-by-step description of every aspect of iCloud.

Since I migrated from MobileMe to iCloud I needed extra help. Negrino's book offered some help but he did not cover a lot of issues such as ending up with a MobileMe email and an iCloud email account causing some interesting issues with my Calendar and Contact list. I was able to resolve them but I wish Tom would have covered them and provided troubleshooting instructions in his manual. Regardless, I highly recommend Negrino's book as both an introduction to iCloud and an excellent resource to consult when setting up iCloud with the various Mac apps.

I learned it is not a matter of just turning on iCloud and everything is ready-to-go. There are further steps one has to take to take full advantage of the wonders of iCloud, and this book did an excellent job of guiding the reader through these steps. Thanks to Tom Negrino's iCloud book, my Mac is "sailing away high on a cloud."
