Standby power, also called vampire power, vampire draw, phantom load, or leaking electricity, refers to the electric power consumed by electronic appliances while they are switched off or in a standby mode. A very common "electricity vampire" is a power adapter which has no power-off switch. In study’s performed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory indicated that Standby power consumption accounts for approximately 10% of total residential electricity consumption in America, adding up to more than 3 Billion Dollars in annual energy costs. Some such devices offer remote controls and digital clock features to the user, while other devices, such as power adapters for laptop computers and other electronic devices, consume power without offering any energy saving features. Until NOW!!!! With iGo’s Green technology products, you can save the standby power wasted – automatically! No need to remember to unplug your laptop, iGo does the GREEN thinking for you! Sleek, energy-saving power management system with integrated iGo Green Technology automatically reduces wasted standby power. Plug in your computer and other devices to save power without the hassle of unplugging your devices.

Overall a nice attempt but falls short of what I understood it could/should do. Standby power from AV equipment is a waste and I was excited to try something new to mitigate it. And I loved the tower form factor. So much nicer looking and actually did a great job managing cables. What I discovered...and this wasn't clear to me in the product description...was that in order to "bring components back to life" after the iGo Green Mode powered them down you have to physically press a power button on the tower. Merely using the remote...or pressing the power button on an AV component for that matter...was not enough to wake it up. Since I have everything in a sealed cabinet, this was a deal-breaker and I returned it. If you're not bothered by this fact, then I recommend the iGo. It just seems to me that a with a little bit of the right technology, a call for power by connected components should be able to wake up the iGo. Even if it actually requires a small amount of standby power of its own to do this, it would be substantially less than the amount saved by keeping multiple power hungry components powered down.

I bought this thinking it would work for my home theater stuff. That was dumb. The way this thing works is like this (at least from my experience): You plug in your whatever to the green outlets, and every half hour the tower checks those outlets to see if they are in need of electricity. This works great if your laptop is plugged in; it gets power only when it needs to. The problem is when I had my TV connected. Turning on the TV meant that I had to physically press the "instant on" button on the tower to get power to the outlet, and then turn on the TV. That got old real fast. Granted, there are four outlets that are designated "always on", but I had more than four things that I wanted to turn on using only a remote.

The Smart Tower is good for charging devices, but not so good for things that need power instantly (TV, desktop computer, paper shredder, PS3, etc....)

Unfortunately, the only thing I can think this is good for is charging stuff.

This is a great product. Don't be fooled by reviews saying it isn't! It works exactly as advertised and really looks nice, too!

Here's how I'm using mine:
Always on:
- lamp

Auto pair #1:
- Canon EOS 7D charger
- AA charger

Auto pair #2:
- MacBook Pro charger

USB #1:
- iPhone

I use this next to my bed so I can leave my MacBook Pro charger plugged in 24/7 (I have 2 spares). When I leave for the day, I unplug my laptop and the next time the tower checks for electricty usage, it cuts the power to my charger, so it doesn't waste any electricity. Same thing for my battery chargers!

***Don't forget that once you plug everything in (while NOT actively charging), you need to hold the button until the light flashes***

This calibrates the tower so it knows the low threshold for cutting power. Otherwise, you'll have unpredictable results, most likely. You can, theoretically, set it up to cut the power when your laptop is asleep or closed, but I didn't have great luck with that. Besides, I don't really want my battery draining and re-charging all night long. Though you won't be stuck with a dead battery if you use it this way. AT MOST, it will be off 30 minutes. That's not enough to deplete your battery, but it may be enough to be annoying, hence the reason for my setup.

Love the addition of 2 USB ports, since it frees up the outlets on the back for other devices!

Also, I e-mailed support asking them a few questions on how it works and sent it around 7 or 8pm. Within 5 or 10 minutes, I had a reply! Thoroughly impressed with the product's look, functionality, and support! I WILL be buying their products again (though I only need 1 more device before I'm covered lol)

So the fine point on this product is that in order to save power, this four green outlets are sensed separately for the demand for power, but this only occurs every 10 or 20 min--I forget which. So, if you need power immediately, you'll have to press the little rectangle button on the front. Otherwise, the other outlets and two front USB ports are on all the time like a regular outlet.

Can't say I had detailed energy demand differences from my electric bills (and because the demands change with household use like A/C, heating, etc) to compare, so I'm not sure about the decrease in electricity bills. I can say that through this and a consistent increase of my thermostat to 79 or 80 degrees when I'm away from home, my electric bills are much lower this year.

Product works as expected. Good layout for the plugs; I like how I can fit a bunch of plugs/adapters at the same time using the green outlets. Only con is that I wish you could flip a tiny switch to all the plugs or to the USB ports to connect them to green management or on all-the-time... I-go needs to get on that.

My husband and I have been trying to "green" our home for some time. Curbing vampire electricity is something that he wanted to solve right around the time iGo was brought to our attention. It took less than 5 minutes to install the iGo tower. We use it for our computer, speakers, monitor and a few other things and we use the USB ports to charge our iPhones and iTouch since all of the plugs are taken by other devices. What I like about the tower also is that there are ports that will not shut down for items like a wireless modem that, at least in our house, need to remain on all of the time.

We've had it for over a month and weren't sure if we'd see a difference in our electrical bill or not since our house is of decent size and it would be tough to gauge. We had some house guests that used more energy than normal, we're sure. Our bill since the iGo was exactly the same as the month prior. My husband is convinced having the iGo saves a little $. What I'm happiest about is that the iGo is in a cabinet that our desktop computer box sits in. Despite keeping the cabinet door open and a vent in the back, the area used to get warm and I'd hear our computer rev up. It doesn't get nearly as hot as it used to.

I will add that I received this product complimentary due to my website, but wasn't under any obligation to write an Amazon review. I can tell you with 100% certainty we'll be adding more iGo products to our home at our own cost.
