Product Description

iGo’s Green technology limits the amount of standby power wasted - by virtually detecting when a device is pulling power. When the device no longer needs power, iGo green adapters automatically shut off - reducing the amount of electricity waste. There is no need to remember to unplug the adapter to save energy, this power adapter does the thinking and energy saving for you. What is standby Power? Standby power, also called vampire power, vampire draw, phantom load, or leaking electricity, refers to the electric power consumed by electronic appliances while they are switched off or in a standby mode. A very common "electricity vampire" is a power adapter which has no power-off switch. In study’s performed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory indicated that Standby power consumption accounts for approximately 10% of total residential electricity consumption in America, adding up to more than 3 Billion Dollars in annual energy costs. Some such devices offer remote controls and digital clock features to the user, while other devices, such as power adapters for laptop computers and other electronic devices, consume power without offering any energy saving features. Until NOW!!!! With iGo’s Green technology products, you can save the standby power wasted - automatically! No need to remember to unplug your laptop, iGo does the GREEN thinking for you!

I can't believe this thing made it past the most basic review of it's design.
Mr. Wizard
I tried adjusting the setting for several months to make sure that the device is calibrating... same thing..

I wanted it to turn on when I pushed the buttons and off when it's just in clock mode.

I recently came across this product in a Wal-Mart clearance section for $6 so I decided to do a little research before I ultimately ended up buying three of these power smart outlets.

I've seen multiple negative reviews of this product and aside from confusing information on the package the negative reviews are unwarranted; this product does what it claims to do.

What it's not: It is not a magic outlet that meets every unique need you can dish up.

What it is: A device that works wonders for electronics that can constantly demand electricity. I'll explain. It works for laptops and phone chargers but beyond that it is mediocre at best.

What do I mean by constantly demanding electricity. Electronics like phones, mp3 players, and laptops have charging cables that when an electronic is plugged in to it requires constant juice from the outlet. These type of devices work great with this product. However, electronics like televisions, desktop computers, dvd players, etc... will work mediocre with this product because they send a power on or off signal once when pushed not constantly like a phone charger. So unless you time it just right to the second to push the button at the moment this device checks if power is needed you're out of luck; you'll have to manually push the power button on the device to send power to the electronic item plugged into it. So you're creating the need to push two buttons to power up one item. But in theory you will still save power when the device is turned off.

IMPORTANT: This device will check if power is needed for the devices plugged into the outlet once every 30 MINUTES and this time is not adjustable.

I bought these on Woot a couple weeks ago. There was a lot of discussion on the bad reviews that some people have posted. But I agree with the positive reviews. If you know how to use this and what the application is and what devices are most appropriate for using with this, then it works absolutely great. If you expect it to just work on every single device you own and want to power, then no, this isn't for you.

These iGo Green devices are meant for use primarily with devices that charge themselves. Chargers are vampires, they will continue to use energy even if the device is already full or even absent. If you use the iGo green with charging devices, they work great and will save you energy. What they do is they check every 30 minutes to see if energy is needed on the device or not. If it checks and sees your laptop is fully charged, it will go back to sleep for another 30 minutes. If, however, it sees that your laptop isn't fully charged, it will turn on the juice and check again in 30 minutes. And it works great, I've noticed that after I dock my laptop for charging, it will charge until it's full and then the charger shuts off.

But cell phones, laptops, electric toothbrush docks, electric razor docks, and devices you use very infrequently but are plugged in all the time (toaster, mixer, blender) are perfect for these iGo Green devices. But if, like the negative reviewers, you are trying to run a fan, monitor, PS3, or any other device like that, then it is beyond the scope of the application these were designed for and you'll be unhappy.

I have been using this for about a week now, and so far it's working as advertised. I have two (one for mobile phones and one for laptops) in use, and as the instructions say, this works best when you group your usage by power draw. It appears that my laptop chargers are now turned off at night when the machines aren't in use, and the mobile phone chargers are off during the day. So, I anticipate a reduction in power consumption.

This device does what it's supposed to do, and does that well. Thing is, I can't get it to remain securely in the wall outlet. Most of these type of outlets use both outlets, or a screw thru the wall plate to secure it, but this has neither. It won't fall out all by itself, but comes out easily when inserting or removing devices. Any one got a trick for me?

This is a wonderful little device. Don't be fooled by people attempting to misuse it. It works exactly as advertised if you're using it for the intended purpose. I have 3 of their devices (1 tower and two of this particular device). Here's how I'm using them:

iGo Wall Surge Protector #1 (living room):

Always on:
- lamp
- humidifier (darn Kansas winters!)

Auto:
- MacBook Pro charger
- 2-slot iPhone/iPod charger

--

iGo Wall Surge Protector #2 (living room):
Always on:
- lamp

Auto:
- Wii remote charger

--

iGo Tower:
Always on:
- nothing

Auto:
- MacBook Pro charger (in 1st pair of auto outlets)
- Canon EOS 7D battery charger (in the 2nd pair of auto outlets)
- AA battery charger (in 2nd pair of auto outlets)

USB:
- iPhone

--

When I need to use the MBP charger on either the tower or wall device, I plug in my MacBook Pro and hit the button on the iGo device. Immediately I have power. If I unplug the charger from my laptop, the next time it checks for electricity usage, it turns off (it checks every 30 minutes). Oftentimes, if my laptop isn't too low, I'll just plug in and go on about my business. The next time it checks for power usage, *boom* my laptop is charging. Same goes for all other chargers I've used with these devices.

NOTE: it's not really the greatest for a desktop computer ... it *could* be used for that, but it's going to be a lot trickier getting it working. These devices are really best for charging devices. They're incredibly easy to get working, just plug everything in WITHOUT anything charging, hold the button until the light flashes, and let go!
