I was looking for a compact speaker for my kitchen and I wanted something that supports AirPlay rather than Bluetooth, since AirPlay makes it easier to stream content from multiple devices (iPhones, iPads, and Macs) without worrying about how and when to change device pairings. We have a lot of devices that make their way to the kitchen -- iPhones, our kids' iPod touches, and an iPad as well as a couple of Macs in other parts of the house -- and it's nice to be able to control music from whichever device you happen to be using at the time.

I needed something with a small form factor that can sit on the counter and stay out of the way and unobtrusive, but that provides good sound and enough power to be heard over the mixing and sizzling and chopping and washing up and other noises that routinely fill my kitchen. The iW3 meets all of my criteria. It's about 5 inches square and 9 inches tall, which means you can tuck it away on a shelf or in the corner of the countertop. For something so small it provides pretty good sound quality, and my experience so far with AirPlay support has been flawless. AirPlay gets a lot of bad press for network dropouts and audio glitches, but I have experienced none of those. It may be that my home network is well designed or that the iW3 is only about 25 feet from my wireless router (an Apple TimeCapsule), or it may be that the AirPlay implementation in the iW3 is better than most. Either way, I've had no AirPlay issues at all. I like being able to stream music from iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora as well as Internet radio and almost anything else I can play on any of our devices.

Setting up the speaker was a bit less than smooth.

I got a great deal on this speaker and am very happy with the sound. The issue was that the setup via the iHome app is a little problematic. First, I charged the unit. Not a problem at all. The next step was to download the iHome app via iTunes for free. Once installed, you connect the cable from the speaker to your device (I had my iPhone 4S). It allows you to pick your network and enter your password. My issue was that it seemed to hang at this point.

I realized that I was connected to my wi-fi network since the green light was on and not blinking which indicated a connection. My problem was trying to get the AirPlay to work. For this, I can say that Apple made it slightly more difficult that expected. HERE'S MY TIP FOR AIR PLAY- I learned that I had to play a song on my device and then swipe up to reveal the sub-menu that is now on the new iOS and I can then choose the speaker to play music through.

From there, it was smooth sailing. Everything worked perfectly. I could control sound volume and song selection from the speaker. I think that people get frustrated from the setup and rightfully so but it does work nicely once you get over the hurdles. Hope this helps someone!

UPDATE: Dec. 26, 2013-
Trying to determine if you have to leave the master power switch (on the rear of the unit) in the ON position. I turned this off and it seems to have forgotten my wi-fi network. IT was not difficult to resync and then it works fine. I will report more later. I think that the unit sounds great but there seems to be little out there in the way of reviews with tips to help solve simple issues. Hope this helps someone or that others will comment.

UPDATE: Dec.

Actually, it looks pretty nice and feels well made, but it rarely worked. Trouble connecting to wifi and often after it would connect the icon for it simply would not show up in iTunes or on my iPad (both of which had software completely up to date). Then there were the times it would connect and show up but always cut out after 2:30 of a song. You get the idea. The web site was no help at all. I took the first one back thinking it was simply defective. It was, but so was the second one and I simply didn't get around to taking it back in time. This will likely be my last iHome purchase.

This product was purchased after trying 3 other airplay speakers. We tried a Samsung, a phillips i think, and the bose. For all the other products we found that we shouldn't have to pay per 250 for a devise that linked to the internet irregularly and had middle of the road sound. The samsung sound was by far the worst. The sound of this devise was on par with the others, and only cost 50ish dollars.

I have held off on writing a review as i wanted to use the devise for longer than a month. After a summer of taking it from the dock in the bedroom to the back deck or front porch/ driveway, we found that we get a really good physical range. (Note- we are currently only using a Verizon Hotspot 890L as our home internet- not a strong, fast or consistent signal) we have had some problems recognizing iOS devises that don't always stay connected to the internet (iPhones), but our laptop and iPads (always connected to the router) hook up immediately.

When our permeant internet service gets installed we plan to purchase another one of these speakers to be used in the basement and back yard. Software options like Airfoil and the mac software have the ability to create a whole home sound system.
