Let's just say the Apple Magic Mouse's spell has faded fast.....The Magic Mouse is great if you need a precision instrument, but if you need a mouse that will just plain work, the iHome may be a better bet.

Right out of the box, the iHome comes with two Duracell batteries. Batteries not included is the story of my life and I'd genuinely prefer to use rechargeable rather than fill the landfills with my spent batteries--on the other hand, it's a serious pain to purchase an item and discover you don't have the right batteries to make it work. Big Kudos to iHome for including that set of batteries.

Second, the mouse has a scroll wheel. Having that defined space makes it a lot easier to deal with text. And if you have felines or children in the house, you don't have to worry about moving far away from your intended target if your arm gets jogged.

Third, movement is precise and quick. I'd rate it on the same level as the Magic Mouse without the worry about going sideways without intending to do so.

Fourth, having a left and right click option really does help sometimes.

Fifth, I'd have replaced two sets of the Magic Mouse batteries by now. I've had this mouse on my computer for almost a month and the battery hasn't died. Both my husband and I have come in and played games, done whatever it takes to kill the battery--and it's still going strong.

Sixth, the iHome goes to sleep after a few minutes of non-use. All you have to do is wiggle the mouse and it's back live. No need to shut the mouse off like the Magic Mouse.

The iHome mouse isn't quite as sleek as the Magic Mouse, and it doesn't feel as good in your hand, but overall, my experience is much better and I'm happier--particularly at a lot lower price.

I'm giving this bluetooth mouse 4.5 out of 5 stars. Set up was easy, beginning with the fact that batteries are included. I opened the mouse by depressing the crescent shaped button at the bottom of the bottom side. The bottom cover pops off, which is designed a little differently from what you might be used to, where there's a little rectangular compartment with a little rectangular cover. The batteries go into to little tube-shaped thingies, and you can tell by looking at the connectors on the cover which way to orient them. Battery insertion and orientation is also described heiroglyphically in the instructions, but I never needed them to set up and start using this mouse.

Once the batteries were in, I located the discover-me button on the bottom of the mouse and pressed it once. The mouse started blinking, and I told my bluetooth assistant on my MPB to look for it. The MBP found it right away, and we were off.

Scrolling was consistent with Lion preferences (which are different from earlier versions of OS X). All buttons work as expected. Unlike the magic mouse, which I have and love, there is no gesture surface on top, but this mouse is half the price of that one.

I did deducted one-half star because even at half the price of the magic mouse, this is still pretty expensive. But it looks good, and it works correctly. And it comes with batteries.

It's perhaps not quite fair to review this product, as I haven't been able to use it, but perhaps my experiences will help potential buyers.

The iHome bluetooth mouse comes with batteries and a quick start guide and, theoretically, it should be a snap to set up: put the batteries in, pair it with your Mac, and you should be good to go.

My first problem came with the batteries. I realize I wasn't thinking outside of the box enough, but it took me five minutes (I actually timed this) to figure out how to take off the battery cover. There's a button on the bottom of the mouse to depress, but when I pushed it, nothing happened. I figured the cover was stuck so eventually I tried prying it off with various sharp objects, but I succeeded only in gouging the plastic. Turns out that what appears to be the cover is not. The cover that comes off is in fact that part of the mouse you'll likely be holding when you press the cover release button. It's horribly counterintuitive, and the diagram in the directions does nothing to help you out here.

But on to more important matters. In the end I could not get the mouse to pair with any of the computers I tried it on (this after restarting my computer and checking the batteries of the mouse and making sure that bluetooth is on; that is, I went through all of the items in the troubleshooting list iHome provides in its booklet). I tried to find information online and couldn't find much. I attempted to use the device with four Macs, three of them running 10.6.8 and one 10.4.11.

I did find one discussion of potential interest online, though in the event it didn't help me.

Over all, I've been very impressed with this mouse. The motion is very smooth, the tracking is excellent, and I like the way the buttons and the scroll wheel feel. It also looks great.

There were a couple minor glitches with the installation process. The first is installing the batteries. I pressed the battery release button and nothing seemed to happen. I consulted the pictures in the quick start guide and tried again. Nothing. I started picking at the edges and couldn't figure it out. I have several other travel size mice and was expecting this iHome mouse to open in a similar way. No dice. Turns out the whole bottom half of the mouse comes off, which was not easy to figure out and kind of awkward. They REALLY need to update their quick start guide with some kind of picture that makes this more clear.

The other glitch was really minor. The quick start guide explicitly says in step 5 "your computer should locate a device named 'iHome Bluetooth Mouse'" The device my system found was "bluetooth laser mouse"

Both of these were minor issues and I would not have deducted any stars from the rating for it. What I did deduct a star for is how long it takes this mouse to wake up after the system wakes from sleep. Yikes is it slow! I'm used to Logitech bluetooth mouse and it works almost instantly after I open my laptop. This one took about 7 seconds.

All in all, I'd recommend this mouse, but be prepared for slow wake-up. Though perhaps other won't have the same issue.

I have a macbook air running mountain lion (10.8.2)

Update 12/24/12: Had to downgrade from 4 stars to 3. This product would be great if it didn't lose connection all the time. I'll be in the middle of using it and the connection will drop. I love how smooth the motion is, but it's not a reliable mouse.
