Customer Reviews

All the devices connected with no problems via Bluetooth.

As it is, it still would be something I'll use quite a bit, and would say would be worth procuring.

Also the keyboard must be plugged into an AC outlet at all times.

In my ongoing quest to find the perfect external keyboard for the iPad, I took the iHome IDM5B for a test drive. Ultimately I decided not to buy this product. Why? Sixty seconds after an easy start up, my finger dragged across the keyboard and knocked off the bluetooth connection. My bad. I tried several times to reconnect it with no success. So I powered down the keyboard, turned it back on and again tried to re-establish the bluetooth connection. Still no luck. I powered off BOTH devices, powered them back on and still was unable to get the keyboard to recognize my iPad (and I was trying really hard). I grant it could have been user error, but it also may be a bug that causes the product to seize up after it's been disconnected. But the clincher was that the only thing that keeps the iPad physically connected to the keyboard is gravity. There is nothing on the keyboard that holds the iPad in place, no slot, no border, no tongue-in-grove molding. The iPad just leans against the keyboard cover and balances there, waiting to be knocked off where it will fall to the table or onto the floor. That is what ultimately made me take a pass on this keyboard.

I own 2 tablets and 5 Smartphones and I know that the one thing that these don't so well is typing notes, stories, etc. Anything longer than a text and you have to go back and double check your auto-correct or you get tired moving your fingers around. I've seen some really great tablets, and some that have cases, that come with a keyboard that resolves these issues. (Windows 8 tablets are a great example). This product does nothing for you.

The Bad:
First it's very, very large. It's higher off the kitchen table than either of my laptops! The angle is tilted up too much to be comfortable as well. It reminded me of an old typewriter, which is not good. The tablets sits in a small slightly lipped area - but there isn't any seat and if you bounce this the tablet can and does fall off. Once you connect to Bluetooth you have to watch the connection as I found it disconnected all the time on my Xyboard 10. And when connected I found it only worked with some programs. Evernote? Yes. Emails and messages? No. I couldn't even use this to type the password on my WiFi. One of my least favorite parts of this product is the woefully short power cord that always has to be plugged in. It's maybe 3' long, which isn't long enough to get from a table to a wall outlet. I could go on, but you get the drift.

The Good:
The Bluetooth connection was a one button connect (no password) - but the connectivity problems mentioned above kill this feature. If you are watching a movie the screen is propped up well. The keyboard works with some programs. I'm really searching for positives here.

Summary: It's blocky, huge, doesn't work well. It turns your sleek, mobile tablet into a huge corded laptop that doesn't always work right. I don't recommend it at all.

I picked up one of these from a local retail store but was please to find it here for a cheaper price - I'm considering returning the one that I got to save some money and get it here, but in any case, I am very satisfied with this product. As an iPad user that does a lot of fictional writing, having a real physical keyboard is a very nice change from the on screen touch keyboard that I seem to struggle so badly with. Unlike the other user that review this item at the time of this writing, I haven't had any connectivity issues like they were - though it will disconnect when I remove my iPad and maybe leave the room with it, but that's to be expected I would say. My favorite bit about this unit is the speakers, being able to stream internet radio through the nice pair of drivers that this device has while I write is huge for me, and something I never really thought about when I bought it. Short story is that I would recommend this to anyone that does even a small amount of writing on their iPad.

This device paired fairly easily with my Kindle Fire HD, and the keyboard and speakers work, pretty much. But it's large and awkward to use, and has some functionality problems.

The speakers are OK, but not great. Given the size of this thing they could have included better speakers. If I happen to be using the keyboard I'll generally use the speakers, but I find if I'm just looking to listen to something I'm much more likely to use a yellowed old pair of computer speakers instead of this thing. The old computer speakers sound much better than this.

The keyboard also works, sort of. Fairly frequently I'll have one key repeat, ten times or a hundred times. It also lags a bit. I type quickly and watch the screen, and it's frustrating to have the keyboard be a word or two behind and suddenly repeat one letter, while losing the next ten words or so. The solution seems to be to wait for the letter to stop repeating, delete, then start over. It seems to do this in batches, so it will be fine for a few minutes and then it will repeat letters several times for a few minutes. It's better than working with an on-screen keyboard, but very distracting if you've got a lot of writing to do.

There's a cover that sits over the keys when the keyboard is not in use, and it flips up to support the tablet or other device while in use. In that position, the tablet is very nearly vertical. It's not a good viewing angle for the tablet and it means the Fire sometimes flops over onto the keyboard (or my hands) while I work.

My solution for this, and for the steeply angled keyboard, was to put a large 3-ring binder under the keyboard. That helps, but it also raises the keyboard well above the desk. My solution for THAT is to keep the whole mess on my lap.
