5.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all May 4, 2011
By Alex
Color Name:Black
I was contemplating on whether to get this or the iDM9 model (the long one that also accommodates the iPad 1st gen). Problem with the iDM9, it is NOT bluetooth-enabled and you cannot change the orientation of the iPhone or iPad. My friend and I tested the sound quality and found out this (the iDM12) sounds much better than it's more expensive counterparts (I believe, Bose is the best). I went to both BestBuy and the PX (Army Exchange) to test these models and others like Sony and iLuv products. Comparatively, for price and sound quality, this doesn't disappoint. If you're going to use this as personal speakers (i.e., cubicle setting, your desk or personal work area, bedside, etc), this will be perfect. I guess the manual says up to 30 feet range. I bought this at the PX for about $70.

What is bad about this model?
(1) This doesn't come with the adapter. Only USB is used for charging. Therefore, you'll use your iPhone's adapter, iPod touch's adapter, or whatever converts a USB to a wall plug.
(2) Manual does NOT tell how long to charge the speakers for, nor does it tell how long the battery will last on full charge. It's sort of a guessing game. If someone finds it, please let others know.

Overall, these personal speakers are the best for it's price. If you don't believe me, try it and compare. Obviously, this one's for keeps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay for some music, shrill for others... June 14, 2011
Color Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This speaker system has a very cool design, with the iPad base covering the speakers when you're not using the system. I wish the sound were as good as the design. For certain kinds of music, like roots stuff (folk and blues), adult pop, jazz & classical, it sounds pretty good. But when I play a lot of alt-rock, there's a shrillness to the sound that makes some tracks unlistenable. The high end is almost *too* high when played at a higher volume, so that it just sounds ugly. If you're playing your iPod on shuffle like I do, you're going to skip a lot of tracks because the sound is too piercing. I was also disappointed at the short time the unit plays before having to be recharged. I was hoping for longer. Also, it took a *lot* longer for mine to recharge than some other people have suggested. I'd say recharge it overnight, because it took about four to five hours to fully recharge. On the positive side, the Bluetooth connection is easy and effective. My iPhone linked immediately and the range of distance was pretty far before the signal dropped. In short, it's an okay portable system, but with a too bright high end. Use it in your work area, and you'll be fine, but don't expect it to fill a large space.

Color Name:Black|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I was excited to get my iHome iDM12BC Bluetooth Speaker System -- and I wasn't disappointed. I've never had a portable speaker for my iPod or iPad before. Sometimes, Bluetooth devices can be tricky. Well, the iDM12BC is easy to charge, easy to pair and easy to use; and it fits in my fanny pack for a picnic or road trip. Bliss.

I've listened to the speaker system with Reggae, Pop, Rock, Country, Classical, New Age, Ragtime, and Rap music. I played around with my equalizer settings, too. I watched -- and listened -- to an episode of Law & Order: SVU. The iDM12BC's tone is solid and there's no "hiss" or "popping" that one got with older systems designed for computer use. This speaker is clear, even and unobtrusive. Note: it isn't made to be LOUD, although it quite easily filled my loft with music. The sound adapted to my equalizer settings with ease -- but it didn't upset the neighbors. If you're used to teeth-shaking bass, this speaker system isn't for you. BUT, if you're like I am, and want to be able to listen to awesome Ian Hunter tunes whilst putting together vegan cuisine in the kitchen or sing along with Harry Nilsson with friends from your Spent Youth; or you want to watch an episode of Bones all toasty happy in bed, the iDM12BC is an excellent speaker. It's *intimate.* I'm Disabled; and there are times when I can't tolerate loud sound. (It makes my bones ache.) I turned my iDM12BC on and was soothed by Jean Michael Jarre's "Oxygene." It was amazing to be able to listen to music without ear buds without pounding physical pain.

If you're one of those folks who enjoys music on a hike with few friends, the iHome iDM12BC is a good choice: It's not *too* loud and it's exactly right for the soundtrack of the world and the mountains and the beach. I took it my speaker with me into the forest for a picnic with my Service Dog; and nobody complained. In fact, a nice hiker dude asked where he could get one and the music playing on it (Jarre, again.)

I replied. "amazon.com."

Of course.
