Definitely NOT a dock
on July 25, 2011
In all, I think iHome is trying to make buyers feel this is something more than it actually is: a bare-bones, battery-operated speaker for your MP3 player. As such, it's just OK...the sound quality is as good as could be expected for a speaker in this price range.
My BIGGEST complaint is the misleading way that this speaker system is being marketed by iHome...read on so that you know what you do and do NOT get with this speaker system:
1) When you look at the photos that accompany the product description, none of them show the black cable that MUST be plugged into the headphone jack of whatever device you want to hear. No cables in the photo may trick you into thinking this is a dock. It is NOT. It is merely a plastic stand that allows you to rest your music device on it. The supplied cable is a bit too short (nearly stretched to its limit when used on my iPad), and it can't be substituted with another cable because one end of it is permanently attached to the speaker.
2) The name of this product includes the phrase "for iPad, iPod..." This might give you hope that your Apple device might somehow dock with it, while "other MP3 players" must rely on the cable. Sorry to dash your hopes...no docking for ANY devices. (And the title also includes the word "Gunmetal". Note that this refers strictly to the color...not the material. This is plastic, not metal.)
3) The description of this product says that it has a "Rubberized pad to hold iPod or any MP3 player with a no-skid surface that safely cradles your music player". Would this make you think that a rubberized pad holds your MP3 player? If so, then you'd be wrong. There is a rubberized pad on the bottom of the device, to keep it from sliding on the table. But the cradling itself is hard plastic. To be fair, when I put my bare iPad in the stand, it sat securely enough in both portrait and landscape style that I wasn't worried about the stand falling over. However, I feel that the description incorrectly suggests that this has some kind of padding that makes the player sit securely in the speaker stand...it does not.
As I said, this is OK for the price. Just be sure you know what you're getting!
