I bought this for work and it does great. Unlike another reviewer, I wanted it to be battery operated. Does well with both my iPod and iPhone4. If you're looking for power and super sound quality, this one isn't for you. If you're looking for something to provide background music, this will do the trick. I do have to replace the batteries each week. I get about 20 - 25 hours use on the 4 AA required. Fortunately, I use rechargeable.

In all, I think iHome is trying to make buyers feel this is something more than it actually is: a bare-bones, battery-operated speaker for your MP3 player. As such, it's just OK...the sound quality is as good as could be expected for a speaker in this price range.

My BIGGEST complaint is the misleading way that this speaker system is being marketed by iHome...read on so that you know what you do and do NOT get with this speaker system:

1) When you look at the photos that accompany the product description, none of them show the black cable that MUST be plugged into the headphone jack of whatever device you want to hear. No cables in the photo may trick you into thinking this is a dock. It is NOT. It is merely a plastic stand that allows you to rest your music device on it. The supplied cable is a bit too short (nearly stretched to its limit when used on my iPad), and it can't be substituted with another cable because one end of it is permanently attached to the speaker.

2) The name of this product includes the phrase "for iPad, iPod..." This might give you hope that your Apple device might somehow dock with it, while "other MP3 players" must rely on the cable. Sorry to dash your hopes...no docking for ANY devices. (And the title also includes the word "Gunmetal". Note that this refers strictly to the color...not the material. This is plastic, not metal.)

3) The description of this product says that it has a "Rubberized pad to hold iPod or any MP3 player with a no-skid surface that safely cradles your music player". Would this make you think that a rubberized pad holds your MP3 player? If so, then you'd be wrong. There is a rubberized pad on the bottom of the device, to keep it from sliding on the table. But the cradling itself is hard plastic. To be fair, when I put my bare iPad in the stand, it sat securely enough in both portrait and landscape style that I wasn't worried about the stand falling over. However, I feel that the description incorrectly suggests that this has some kind of padding that makes the player sit securely in the speaker stand...it does not.

As I said, this is OK for the price. Just be sure you know what you're getting!

I only had it for 2 mos, and didn't blast the sound at all. But for whatever reason the speakers have already blown out and are totally raspy.
- I was wrong, I contacted iHome and they said when it sounds raspy it's time for battery replacement
- I did just that and it is working PERFECTLY NOW

Very happy with the sound now!!!!

I bought this thinking that, like other iHome portable speakers I've owned in the past, I'd be able to plug it in with the appropriate adapter. WRONG. there is no such option. Running it off of batteries sounds OK for about fifteen minutes, then the sound goes down the toilet as the batteries lose juice. I can't return it, either... I threw away the package. So now I'm stuck with this useless item... Normally I like iHome, but this was a huge disappointment.

Update:
It only worked twice.
The second time I tried to use it, it took about two minutes for the thing to register that it was on. The third time, it didn't turn on at all. I've tried replacing the batteries, but to no avail.
Let me clarify that I do like iHome products immensely, but this one is a waste of time. Please choose another one of their products before picking this one.

The whole purpose of purchasing this unit (I purchased the purple one) was to have something small and portable that would allow me to listen to my iPad's and my phone's music and podcasts throughout the house if I was cleaning, etc. This unit gave horrible sound. I would have to hold the jack into the headset hole at just the right angle in order to hear anything (tried on multiple devices -- same problem). If I would move my hand, sound would either go out completely or it would lose bass, treble, etc. Bottom line, this unit may be cheap (pf $19 @ Walmart), but cheap doesn't matter if it doesn't work. It's going back to the store.

This is not an iPod or iPad dock. There is no Apple interface on this device. It is, quite simply, a set of stereo speakers, a cradle, and an audio cable that fits into the headphone jack of pretty much any small audio device. Such as an iPod or iPad, or any other MP3 player for that matter. This unit does not charge or power your iPod or iPad.

Sounds pretty simple, and it is. But there is a subtle functionality to this device. Firstly, this device is very handy to have with an iPad. The cradle accommodates an iPad just fine, and the audio cable plugs into the iPad's audio headphone jack. Presto! Now your iPad is ready to play music, or even better, play a movie or other video with the iPad cradled at a convenient viewing angle. Even better, most or all iPad cases can stay on your iPad and it will still fit in the cradle. That is not true of the Apple charging cradle. True, this unit does not power or charge the iPad, but with an estimated battery life of 11-12 hours for an iPad, is that such a big deal? Perhaps, perhaps not. Another subtle functionality here is that this unit is powered by four AA batteries. No power cord. it is completely portable. The designers made a wise choice in going with AA rather than AAA batteries; more battery life. Suitable for the backyard, patio, or pretty much anywhere that you might enjoy having powered sound from your audio device. The beach, perhaps.

The sound quality from this unit surprised me. There is a definite stereo effect when listening directly in front of it, and it really boosts the iPad's puny sound output. iPad users will likely find this unit to be a nice-to-have accessory. I do. However, I have to say that the volume level when listening to iTunes movies off the iPad could use more volume. This unit is capable of good volume as evidenced by the volume that can be achieved with it using the iPod. The iPad is not as loud. Future versions of this accessory would benefit from a volume control, rather than depending on the volume control on the iPad. Even at full volume the iPad could use some boost.

Construction of this unit is good. Solid impact plastic.

I find myself using this device more and more. You may too. RJB.

Not the greatest sound but nice to take out on the deck, plug in my iPad and listen to music or the news.

I wanted a speaker system to listen to my mp3 without having to use my earphones, so tried this iHM16B. Turns out this system is exactly what I wanted. Sounds great and a great buy for the price I paid. I recomend this system to anyone that wants to move around the house or garage or where ever without worry about the earbud cord catching or falling and possibly breaking or just wanting to lay down and have the music playing in the distance!!!

I love these speakers! They are cute, portable, and stylish - all while being very loud and effective! I like to use these in the bathroom while I'm getting ready. Perfect because it doesn't take up a lot of counter space.
