I bought this book primarily for the iMovie instructions. It's not a terribly complex program to start with, but I'm new to Macs and I find this section of the book very well written. Lots of color, illustrations. Perfect for the beginner like me. The iMovie section covered basically all the major functions in adequate depth. I felt I had a reasonably good understanding after an hour or so of reading and I was able to edit my first home movie. I can't say much about the instructions for the other programs in iLife, but for the iMovie part, it's perfect.

I bought this one and Pogue's book on iMovie '11 and iDVD, so I could edit some video taken with a new SONY camcorder (whose .mts output has to be converted to edit on a Mac, but that's another story). I'd been a very happy user of Pogue's book on iMovie HD (6.0) for years, and figured his would be the best for this breakthrough new version of iMovie (which restores many of the "lost" advantages of iMovie HD!), but bought the "Portable Genius" as a backup, and because it also included iPhoto and Garage Band. It turns out that this is a case of the "backup" being better than the first choice! After spending (what seemed like) hours poring through Pogue's witty and overly chatty material (definitely a TMI experience for the beginner!), I felt frustrated and turned to the "Genius" and was so relieved! It gets right to the operative point: tells you exactly what you need to know to get started and lays it out in really clear and attactive step-by-step form, no hunting for the meat. It's right there in front of you, like a set of excellent lab instructions! And it's every bit as beautifully designed a book, and enjoyable to read, as Pogue's; in fact, even moreso. I am sure that once I master the basic method (however, I found myself returning to my beloved and much simpler-to-use iMovie HD for the project!), I'll enjoy a reunion with Dave Pogue's book, learning all kinds of things that are interesting but not operatively essential. I love Pogue's work in general, especially his NYT articles and videos, but if you want a single book to guide you in using iMovie '11 and ALL the other iLife '11 programs (iPhoto, GarageBand, etc.), I'm sure this is the best there is! It really does feel like having an Apple Genius by your side: gets right to the issue and gives the solutions with effective clarity.

I have been searching for a iLife book that can acutally help me complete the tasks that I have been struggling with. Example being setting up multiple websites with iWeb and hosting from Mobile Me. I did internet searches and read several books with no help. This book has helped me take my photos, website and documents to the next level. I would totally reccomend this book to those who have some idea what they are doing but need a little extra help!

I purchased this book because I couldn't figure out how to burn my IMovie Project to a DVD. Well, the book tells me to drag the file to IDVD. Well, since IDVD is no longer available and wasn't available with the update of IMovie, this information is not up to date. Did they just take the old book and slap a new title on it?

I was only really interested in Imovie, but it didn't cover all aspects, and those that it did weren't as comprehensive as I would have like. however, I feel it needs a whole book to cover that one subject and it might be unfair to judge on that basis.
