4.0 out of 5 stars Great unit for the price, December 25, 2009

This review is from: iLive Portable Music System / Boom Box with iPod Docking and Recharging (Pink) (Electronics)
At this price point, I do not feel that you can expect superior sound. I do think that this unit has good sound that is average to this price point or slightly better. My daughter loved the color. It is fairly small and will fit great on her night stand. It is also great for travel due to its size (we are used to hauling around a much larger one).

I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again for a child. At this price, even if it breaks in a year, she will have gotten good use out of it. (one of the reasons we don't buy more expensive things for her is that she is a little hard on them).

There is a circular thing that is right behind where the ipod sits and it can be pulled out or pushed in depending on if you have a larger or smaller ipod. This is great compared to other units we have, because my daughter has a nano and it prevents it from being pushed back and potentially bending the connector prongs. It certainly adds to the stability of the ipod.

UPDATE: runs on ac power or batteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great product for a small room, February 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: iLive Portable Music System / Boom Box with iPod Docking and Recharging (Pink) (Electronics)
i bought this for my 4year old daughter. We'd been using a cd player for music since she was born and it finally went kaput. So, I decided to use my ipod in her room instead of buying another cd player and look for an ipod system. I was surprised to find anything at this price point, even more surprised that it looked cute (and in pink, her self-declared favorite color, of course), and I was just delighted when I pulled it out of the box and it felt solid & sturdy. I was worried from other reviews it would feel cheap & flimsy. I plugged it in & set it up at her constant urging, and we listened to music on it no problems. It even sounded better than her cd player and just as good as our iLive player that was $65. It is not feature rich and does not come with a remote. The carrying handle is sturdy and it's a nice compact size. It also has a dial that allows you to support your ipod dependent on its thickness. It plays the radio, but we'll never use that. You can turn it off so that your ipod is not left charging. You can play/skip music using the controllers on the boom box instead of just usin the ipod dial. And the volume knob is on the side. And, in the end, the ipod is actually more sturdy/reliable than cd's ever were. They were always getting knocked loose or scratched, etc. They can control the ipod dial w/o having to hold it in their destructive, little hands and I'm not nervous about it getting ruined. I should clarify, though, that removing it from the music station and carrying it around the house is strictly forbidden because it is "mommy's ipod." If my son's cd player breaks tomorrow, I will buy this same product for his room.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reasonably hearty, January 9, 2010

I purchased this for my 6 year old, who received a hand-me-down ipod as a gift. It plays her favorite music, while charging the first generation ipod nano.

After more than a month of use, it has withstood not only what she dishes out, but also her younger brothers. The ipod sits in the dock reasonably secure and survived an odd-angle tug from my 2 year old.

The volume range is surprisingly loud and measured by number. The rule in our house is a maximum of 3 (of 10) and it fills the house. Inside her room, volume level 2 is more than sufficient. It produces a big sound of reasonable quality for its size.

I don't expect much from a speaker system for my child, except for durability and this one seems to fit the bill. She picked up the button system within seconds.
