4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the world of ETFs
This book is about ETFs which stand for Exchange Trade Funds, which is nothing but publicly traded funds. The author says that investing through ETFs is cost effective, tax friendly, and less risky because of diversification. They can give investors access to investments that are not available through traditional mutual funds. For example, investors looking to invest in...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
Decent book and nice introduction into the world of ETF's. I personally miss a way to get invested when the market heads south. "How to rebalance your portfolio and enter short-funds?" All the constructed an suggested portfolio's have an optimistic and LONG-SIDE vision on the stock market.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, I did make some money..., June 10, 2009
This review is from: iMoney: Profitable ETF Strategies for Every Investor (Hardcover)
THis book was OK. A week after I rec'd it I made 4 trades buying / selling 4 different ETF's- each one only held 1 to 4 days and made close to $1000. The book is a good primer, but be careful INVESTING in ETF' in this volatile market. SHort term - and I mean short term TRADING is probably better. The book was written before all of the current financial mess and bailouts. You can no longer assume anything when it comes to the financial markets. Good Luck.

....little discussion regarding portfolio construction. This criticism may well be a personal disappointment. Tom and John are great writers and Tom's website is a must. All of the five star reviews are on target for a lively up-to-date introduction to ETFs. I only gave one star just to grab the attention of those readers who have read other books and/or are currently using ETFs in their portfolios, but who would like an in-depth discussion of portfolio building. There is just one brief chapter and five sample portfolios. If that's fine for you then definitely go for it.

This book is about ETFs which stand for Exchange Trade Funds, which is nothing but publicly traded funds. The author says that investing through ETFs is cost effective, tax friendly, and less risky because of diversification. They can give investors access to investments that are not available through traditional mutual funds. For example, investors looking to invest in emerging countries such as China or India can do so with less risk through ETFs. The same applies to investing in commodities or currencies. This book does a pretty good job of introducing readers to the fast-growing investment product, ETFs.

Mr. Lydon provides a very good introduction to ETF's. He outlines why they may be a better investment vehicle than mutual funds and he adequately explains all the different types of ETF's. For the novice reader, this book is an excellent place to begin. For the more seasoned investor it may give them a small push to break away from the world of managed mutual funds. Overall, the book is very well written, is factual and reads easily: as if Mr. Lydon is teaching you directly. As a short term trader, I hope Mr. Lydon writes a book on day and swing trading ETF's. I therefor give the book 5 stars for the beginner and 3 for the more seasoned investor with an average of 4 stars.

Good:
* Comprehensive discussion on various types of ETF
* List of good ETFs at the time when the book was written

Would like to see:
* A detailed checklist - How to select an ETF (maybe summarize all tips in one location as an appendix)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for ETF Investing !, June 24, 2008

This review is from: iMoney: Profitable ETF Strategies for Every Investor (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed Mr. Lydon and Wasik's book. They take time to cover the basics and covers the evolution of the fund industry. I think this information is essential to fully understanding ETFs and why their advantages are so great and attractive to investors, particularly those who were burned in the early 2000s with active manager funds.

The whole idea of having a plan for your inexpensive "beta" return source in today's world of "alpha" managers is essential in investment success. Understanding how an index is constructed and weighted is key in knowing what you're in for with these funds. The authors do a great job in disecting the components of these simple, yet powerful products.

Mr. Lydon clearly wants to make sure that the reader is well-rounded in their knowledge about what exactly gave rise to the ETF industry, and the factors that have allowed it to experince its huge growth over the last ten years.

The authors do a really nice job giving investors a simple way to take the knowledge base on ETFs and putting it to practical use with model portfolios tailored to various risk and return profile based on lifestyle and goals.

This book is an excellent entry point for the kind of investor who's always wanted to learn more about ETFs, but wasn't sure where to begin.

5.0 out of 5 stars great investment advice - a must read!, June 27, 2008
This review is from: iMoney: Profitable ETF Strategies for Every Investor (Hardcover)
As a recent retiree and a big fan of [...], I've been looking forward to this book. I was especially interested in the chapters on retirement, as well as the strategies and model portfolios outlined later in the book. The authors do a great job explaining how ETFs can work for someone who wants to be a little more conservative with their investing.

If you don't know ETFs, and have some money in the market, you should definitely read this book. Every smart investor I know has moved into ETFs: they are a great vehicle for personal investing. This book explains them in great detail, with easy to understand language.

5.0 out of 5 stars I now know what my Financial Advisor has been talking about, July 20, 2008
This review is from: iMoney: Profitable ETF Strategies for Every Investor (Hardcover)
Although I have a Financial Advisor who manages my securities, I have often asked myself why my Advisor relies so heavily on Exchange Traded Funds for my portfolio.

This book answers that question. Not only do ETF's make sense, but the iMONEY book makes sense. The authors present their information in a straight forward, no-nonsense, easy-to-read manner.

After reading this book, I would question my Financial Advisor if they did NOT rely so heavily on ETF's.

I want to thank the authors for presenting the information in this book to novices such as me. I am sure that the portions of this book that I did not understand were written for more experienced investors who I hope to be someday.

I would purchase Richard Ferri's book over this one, but, if money is no object buy both of them (I did!). I would add Richard Ferri's book on Asset Allocation.
