Product Description

The Air Pro 3 Wi-Fi is designed for professionals and consumers alike. The aerodynamic iON camera line features a number of significant industry firsts, including being waterproof without a casing to 49 ft. and free cloud storage. It records HD video up to 60 frames per second at 1080p, with dual streaming to enable users to simultaneously “shoot and share” their recordings. A new, 12mp image sensor offers still-image resolution with superior light sensitivity and wider dynamic range, evening challenging low-light situations. The camera’s “anti-shake” feature minimizes the effects of vibration for crisper images, and its built-in microphone is equipped with noise reduction to minimize wind and other distracting sounds on the audio track.

I spend a lot of my time riding motorcycles, both on personal time and as a job. My job requires traffic control which comes with a lot of danger and liability. I chose this camera to help document my work to safeguard me legally..... and to share the fun parts with friends!

MOUNTING:
I bought the helmet/bike mounting pack as well as the suction cup mounting kit to supplement the standard kit. I mainly put the camera on my motorcycle helmet using the 3M mounting system. The snap-lock mounts really allow me a full range of angles and positions for mounting the camera. Since they're ball-joints (much like RAM mounts) I can put the camera in odd places and still get a viable angle.

OPTICS:
This camera has a 160° "fish-eye" lens which allows a remarkably wide-view of everything. I was concerned with the fish-eye making things appear distorted or strangely convex. So I watched as many videos from the Air Pro as I could find on YouTube and couldn't really tell the video was shot with a fish-eye. Of course the depth of the shot is altered (things appear farther away in the center of the shot) which is unavoidable with wide-angle lenses, but it's not bothersome.

The lens protrudes from the housing unlike other cameras where it's recessed in a bevel. I've already used this camera in the rain and have noticed the water rolls off easier which reduces worthless video of dancing water on your camera!

The aperture opens up to f/2.8 for some competitive low light video. I travel through tunnels and have seen the aperture open quickly for seamless transition into the tunnel, but it does take a bit longer to close down again as I exit to the bright light. Not too bad, but noticeable.

Ok, I'm weighting this review because I have read some of the poor review on the iON Air Pro 3 and there BS. I own 2 Pro 3 and 4 Air 1s. Most of the bad reviews are clearly do to operator error. If you are not smart enough to read the directions don't buy one! That said I use the iON's to record in-car footage for a 3/8 mile dirt oval track. They come back packed with dirt and mud and dripping wet and I have not had one failure. I wash them in a bucket of soap and water and have never had water get inside. The only problem is getting the drivers to remember to turn them on and off. The Pro 3 has the best picture of all the Air Pro's and it's awesome! It has a full metal mount (Pro 1s mounts in to plastic). They record two video files, one for the WiFi and one in HD. You computer can't view the WiFi one so don't freak! If you mount it upside down the WiFi file will be upside down but the HD will autorotate if you turn the option ON. Using the WiFi will shorten battery life so Line up your shot and turn it off. Watch you video playback with your WiFi then turn it off. Bottom line it's a GREAT CAMERA if know how to use it.....

So disappointed. I really had high hopes for this. Everything seemed so awesome. Slide to record, good sized sensor, waterproof, nicer shape than GoPro, it seemed like the full package. Then the problems came. and came. and came.

Pros
1) It is really easy to use
2) The image quality is ok. Not GoPro quality but passable
3) The mounts, although super bulky, work really well.

PROBLEMS
1) It shuts off in cold weather.
One of the main reasons I bought this was to film a family ski / snowboard trip in Colorado. It shut off each time within a few minutes of starting to record because it was too cold.

2) The WiFi SUCKS.
At least with Apple iPhone / iPad (I tried multiple versions of both), it's basically worthless. I got it to work a couple times but then it would crash my phone & I'd have to restart both the phone & the camera.

3) The lens is easy to scratch & IS NOT REPLACEABLE!
After returning, already disappointed about my camera's inability to be used in the snow I crashed on my bicycle, scratching the lens. Which isn't replaceable.

4) IT'S NOT FREAKING WATERPROOF!
All that mess, I decided to try it diving, figuring that the water might make the blur / scratch less noticeable. BAD IDEA! Water seeped in through the stupid pod thing & it died. NOW I HAVE A REALLY EXPENSIVE PAPER WEIGHT!!!!

So much for buying something different. I'll just save up & buy a go pro or something else I guess.

Verified Purchase
After a full days use on my motorcycle, on and off road, I can easily say there are only a couple of things that I don't like about it. Over all it was a good purchase considering I got it here NEW on Amazon for $190.00!! Well worth $190.00.

Pro's: Excellent video/picture quality
Waterproof
Installed mic is ok but I used an external mic which works great!
Love the way that it mounts to my helmet with the side-ball mount
Field of view is nice
Solid build
Nice colors with the blue and black
Takes up to a 64gig memory card
2.5-3hr battery life without Wi-Fi turned on (lasted all day!)
The vibration against the helmet when turning it on, recording or shutting it down took out all of the guess work as to what mode the camera was in...VERY COOL! (And easy to operate with gloves on)

Cons: Very noticeable wash out when operating in shadow and bright backgrounds (sitting in the shadows, the outside surroundings may as well not even be there however the shadow areas are nicely in view vs. blacked out.
Wi-Fi view on my android was tiny. The ION APP for this is kind of crappy!
Once the battery is gone…the camera is gone

For me the Pro's outweigh the Con's. It works for me
